YAY!! I finally got a job but...So after months of frustrating dead ends and interview after interview and no job offers, I finally got a job!!! This is my dilemma. I have vacation plans that I have had in place since last year. Its only two days I would need off ( a friday and monday). But its coming up. ( the last weekend in october) Thanks for all the help and advie;. I see two courses of action in your situation. The first, and best option, is to tell the truth when you call and say,"I would love to accept your offer. I do need you to know that I have a pre-arranged vacation at the end of October which would take me out of the office on Friday (whatever date) and Monday (whatever date). I realize that I will be taking those two days without pay." Or, the second, and not so great option, is to wait until the Friday morning and then lie. Call up and say you have the flu or that your child is sick. On Monday morning call and say that the flu was still running rampant during the weekend and you are still feeling woozy. The second option is not the one I would recommend. Way too risky, especially if you are going to need a doctor's note to prove two days off from work sick. Plus, what would happen if you really did get sick during the next couple of weekends. DO NOT LIE AND CALL IN SICK LESS THAN A MONTH INTO A NEW JOB! That is a recipe for a quick disaster. Especially a Friday and Monday combo. They'll be on that like you wouldn't believe and you'll be gone the next week. Your choices are to tell the boss you have these pre-arranged plans and need the two days off (unpaid), or cancel the trip. That's it for choices here.
Tess Hey Tess, I specifically stated that I would not recommend that particular route and included that solely so that the original poster, had she already thought of it, would realize how risky it can be. Especially if proof is needed. By the way, I thought of the option is cancelling the plans, and then dismissed it right away because I am reading into the poster's statement that these plans have been in place since last year, that it is too late to cancel anything. Man, my dyslexia is bad today. Everything I have typed, I have had to change about three times before I got it right. Cancelling a trip is ALWAYS an option and frankly, it amazes me how many times it comes up on these boards with no consideration given to that at all. No one is going to hold a gun to your head and make you go. You may lose a deposit, or even the whole cost of the trip, but no one is making you go. This isn't a 2 week trek across the alps, it is some weekend getaway. Now if it is a weekend to celebrate great-grandma's 99th birthday, then yes, you probably should go because this may be the last chance. A funeral for your favorite uncle who raised you? Yes, go. Most other trips, however, really are optional and for someone who claims to need the job, you've really got to wonder why they haven't already cancelled the trip.
Tess Thanks for all the advice. Its actully my best friends wedding that I am in in Las Vegas. But I told her (my boss) the truth this morning and she said it was no problem at all and that she would even pay me for the days. Thanks everyone for all the help. Sounds like you landed a good job & a really nice boss. Mary | |
