new beginings
Hi everyone, my name is Tim and I need some advice please. My girlfriend and I are currently residing in central Texas but we trying to move to Colorado. The only thing that is stopping us, is finding a job there. We are shooting for the Denver area. I have been working retail and warehouse for the last several years. I'll take what I can get but I would like to try something new. The main problem I'm running into is that, even though the cost of living there is considerably more, I'm not finding any jobs that will match my pay here. We have each received an offer but when we told them we are in Texas, they never called back. We tried to follow up but they wont return our calls, even though we have made it clear location would not be an issue. We are packed and ready to go but we have been that way for 2 months now. I have tried careerbuilders.com, monster.com, jobbing.com, and denverjobsearch.com but 9/10 jobs on there are entry level or you need a degree and the rest wont call us back. I'm doing my best to remain optimistic but I've never had this much trouble finding a job. Any advice is welcome. THANKS EVERYONE
Tim, That's the same thing I'm finding. I am moving from Ohio to Denver but can't make it past the first phone interview. I just returned from two weeks of interviewing in Denver. Everything was great until they realized that I still lived in Ohio. I've been told it's best to find a job and THEN move, but now I'm beginning to wonder. I am ready to go. Everything is packed. I just would like to have a job so that I know where to find an apartment, know that something is happening, not that I'm moving only to resume the same search. What to do? If you find out, let me know!
Denver along with many western cities are getting very expensive to live and work in. Denver is no exception. I was in Minnesota's farm belt a few months ago and was surprised to find homes on 2 acres of land selling for $36,000. That same home and acreage in California would easily demand $1.6 million. A T-Bone steak in that same Minnesota town was $2.79 a pound. In California it is $6.99 a pound for that same steak! If you like retailing, hit retailers like CVS, Costco, Walgreens or a local supermarket. How about Best Buy or Circuit City?
thanks for the reply OC. ive always done retail because its the best paying job around my area (not really my first career choice). right now im in distribution work making $18/ hr. i would gladly work for any of those retailers if they would match that pay. problem is the chances of that are about the same as me finding the bat cave.
I think part of the problem is you're moving to a sophistocated area. Not to pick on Texas in any way, but Denver is more of a Yuppie/White Collar place than most of the mid-west or most of the south. They aren't going to have as many blue collar jobs so the ones that are there are going to be hard to get. Without a specialty or a degree, I think you're going to have a fair amount of difficulty finding something that is going to pay $40K a year and that may not be enough to live at the same level there on as it is where you are now. I don't have any brilliant suggestions except that you consider getting some schooling in something that seems to be in demand in Denver. Also, try Craigslist. Sometimes you'll find gems there that aren't posted on the bigger boards since there's high fees for the large boards.

the whole reason im trying to move to colorado is to get out of this state. i know its a challenge but that will make it all the sweeter when it happens. the sophistication and the friendly people are alot of what draws us there. i really want to go back to school but here in texas they say $26k a year is too much to get any kind of financial aid. they also say that my family should be contributing. im 27 and my only family is my mother and she is in no position to help with college. i learn fast and would be willing to train but with only a diploma and a little college, it seems anything but blue collar is out of reach. if i could just get an opportunity, i KNOW i could grab those stars im reachin for.
Student loans don't require income limits. Talk to another financial aid counselor. All the best with your dreams! Keep after it!
