Job Search when RelocatingHi. I'm hoping that someone out there can help me figure out my next step. I am in the process of planning a move 1200 miles from home. I don't have a job lined up at the new location, nor do I have any leads out there. My internal debate is this: * Do I move THEN find a job, taking a part-time job or temporary job until a better one arises? OR * Do I search for the ideal job from this location, THEN move when a job is secured? Of course, traveling for interviews. The advice I've received is 50/50 ... not helping my situation at all. Has anyone experienced this, either from the applicant or the employer position? What is the general concensus on the best case scenario? Thank you in advance for your help.
I am attempting the same thing. I am planning a move with my family to Colorado after the school year ends. I have opted to try to find the new job before we move, mostly due to the cost of living being higher in Colorado, but also because I don't want to use up all of our cash reserves while I am looking for work or working in a temporary position. I have a good job now so I am not forced to make any drastic decisions. My concern is that I will get a job in Colorado and have to leave my wife and 2 young children in Arkansas for 6 months or so to start the new job. Then I have 2 households to support and am away from my family. I wish you luck in your search. Hi, Cancun. I relocated out of state a little over a month ago...I interviewed with a company that I thought I had in the bag...so I left my job and continued with the move. Before I left, I travel to the state, I now reside in, over 3 times for interviews, before I actually made the move. It was very costly and tiring because nothing was set in stone after the interview...there is usally a few weeks before they make the decision plus you have to take days off your job (which many companies wont like). Once I made the move, it was easier but as you can see, I am still out of work, had several interviews but nothing concrete. So my advice would be, if you are in a hurry to relocate, then go ahead with the process of moving, but make sure you have at least applied to a few companies before the move. If you can hold off a little while, push your resume out there, see which companies are worth your while and invest in one or two trips. Just make sure when you go on the interviews, they let you know how long before they are going to make the hiring decision. Some days I wish I would've waited before I moved, but at the same time, once I got here, I was able to go on several interviews without pressure or stress. I think you just have to figure out what is best for your schedule. Good luck. | |
