How to list freelance work on a resume

Hello again.  I am preparing to apply for a job in event planning at a university.  They are looking for someone with four years of experience.  2+ years of that experience I obtained in my position as an office manager for a real estate company.   I was also doing freelance party planning from 2001-2005.  How do I list this on a resume?  If I'm lucky enough to land an interview, should I bring letters of recommendation?  How many is enough?  Or should I just provide the names of numbers of happy clients?  Thanks again.
Create a freelance experience section of your resume that should include the company name, event name, year, your role/responsibilties and outcomes.

It's never a bad idea to bring along a couple of letters of recommendations and client contact list for your interview. Be sure to give your clients notice so that aren't caught off guard.

In the Work History section of your resume, list the permanent job you had during the years 2001-2005 first and the freelance  underneath. Such as:

Simon's Houses that Sell     2005 - 2007           Office Manager

  • Open House Event Planning
  • Billing
  • Scheduling appointments

Retro85's Parties       2001-2005         Freelance Event Planning

  • Birthday Parties
  • Engagement Parties
  • Weddings
  • Anniversaries
  • Other Events

Contact the customers you had during that time and ask if they would be willing to write a letter outlining how they felt you did with their event and your character during the event's planning.

Did you take any pictures during the event? If you did, make a little portfolio to display for the University officials when they call you in for your interview.
