not really sure what to do

I am not sure what to do at this point.   I was let go from my temp to perm after one week and have been contacting everyone I can think of.   Because I have a CPA license, everyone keeps targeting me towards taxes, but that is not what I want.   I wish to switch my license to non-practicing, because it has just not helped me.   I am also having a hard time because I feel that the place that let  me go did not give me a chance.  They were in a big hurry to hire me, and then had no issues saying "goodbye".   In the meanwhile, I am going to be denied unemployment because I left the last job voluntarily to take this temp to perm.  I have been told I should have never left a permanent job for a temp to perm, but there was every indication it would go perm- that is how they hire all their employees.     I know that I am looking for something that is hard to find- a permanent part-time and I guess I am really getting scared.    I might be able to approach my previous employer of 4 years and see if they need help for year end- I know they have not filled my position, and some weeks back , I was told I could help on a temporary basis, but I don't know what is the best thing to do.     I am having a hard time getting over the feeling that I have "screwed myself"  and I am nervous that I might not find anything for a while.      I am a college grad and have 15 years experience, but I will be 40 in a few weeks, and I am very concerned about being unemployed right now.

Just looking for some ideas.   I really do need to stay part-time- for various reasons, full time is not an issue and I am only looking to earn about $20,000 a year.

We've said all this to you before, but let me say it again, maybe it will help this time.

There are several ways you can approach this.  One is to say you left your last job for a new position that just did not work out.  You were only there a few days and mutually agreed it was not a good fit.  End of story.

Another is to say that you shifted to working temp.  YOu don't have to explain that a temp position ended at all.  They all do.  You don't have to say they fired you, the job ended.  You might say you shifted to the temp work for more variety or challenge or something so that it seems more plausable.

Either way neither one is any big blip in your career.  Don't beat yourself up over this, it isn't going to impact getting you hired somewhere.

It is risky, to leave a permanent job for a temp one.  However, that's what you did.  This same thing could have happened if this had been a perm job too.  The only difference is that if this had been a perm job you would have been working directly for the company and you'd have known it was permanent from the get go, not waiting in temp limbo up to years for them to decide on that.  Since most companies don't offer benefits (or full benefits) to part-time employees, it may make very little difference to you either way.  The biggest dividing line between perm and temp is the benefits issue.

If you need part-time and need time to get yourself together and find another perfect, professional part-time gig (which are not that easy to find), then maybe you should do something else for a few months while you look.  This is the prime time of year for retail to hire.  They offer all sorts of flexible and part-time schedules.  It is a total departure from accounting work, but maybe that break would be good for you so you can figure out how to move forward and give you some income while you think on it.

Thanks Tess,  just venting, I guess over fear of the unknown.  Good to know that this is not a long term career disaster.  Hadn't really thought about retail- will take that under advisement.
