Refusing an Interview

Hey all. This message is going to seem very scatterbrained but that's exactly how I'm feeling right now. Recently I was contacted by a company about 150 miles away that was interested in my resume. I'm currently employed, but I don't find my position very satisfying so I am actively seeking employment, at least locally. I've done a couple of interviews, and have a couple of local ones coming up. Anyway, I was interested in the position at first, but all at once I've gotten wrapped up in some tasks at work. Getting to the interview would involve me driving at least 5 or 6 hours round trip depending on traffic. With these projects, I really don't have time to do that now. Also, before I found my first job I did do some travel for an interview, and everything that could have gone wrong did. So my history regarding long-distance travel to interviews is bad, and the timing looks like it's just not going to work out. Would I be taking any severe risks by turning down this interview? And if not, how should I go about telling them no? I feel bad that I'm even thinking about this, but with the obstacles involved, I feel like even if I did make it down there I'd just be wasting the interviewer's time. I'd appreciate any advice!

If you are really not interested, then don't interview. By, the way? Did you apply or did they just happen upon your information and contact you.

In any case, tell them that you have a project that needs your attention before you can actively continue with your job search.

One company 5 hours away is not going to hurt your chances of receiving other interviews or even offers. When the time comes that you have completed these tasks for your curret employer and are ready to look into companies further from your home and you stumble upon another opportunity at the company you turned down an interview, mention in your cover letter that you applied before but circumstances prevented you from being able to interview.
