Not sure what to do
Right now I have 3 leads and one job offer on my plate. The position that I was offered will start this coming Monday October 8th but I'm not all excited about. I'm more interested in 2 of the 3 potential job offers because everything is better about them (location, pay, benefits, company, etc.). The last lead is one that I'm more into than the job offer so that leaves position that I was offered at the bottom of my list. My question here is, what would any of you do in a situation like this? The position I was offered does not pay much, it's by a company that is not well known. It seems like it will not grow and I will will not progress out of it within the company. The job offer was easy to get because I did not say much during the interview and it was all so quick. I know I'm assuming a lot on a job that I do not know much about that I have not even started with. I am just not that excited about this one. This leaves me to the other leads I have. The two that I'm most excited about I have had 2 phone screenings for each and they seem to have gone very well. The 3rd lead the company is still pending and interviewing other candidates. So I'm still in the waiting process. I have started to make a decision to go work with the company that offered me a job and keep in contact with the other potential jobs. Anyone think this is a bad idea? **Sorry for any gramar error but I wrote this in haste**
Two questions; are you currently unemployed, and why did you apply for a position with a company you have no real interest in? If your unemployed, of course any job is better than no job, but if you plan to hear back about those other opportunities soon, perhaps you can tell the company that you have other offers than you need to consider and would like some time to decide. Also, as a person who is currently employed but always looking I find this bit of advice very helpful. Don't waste your time and energy on applying for a position that your only so/so about. Because if you're do get an interview or job offer then your stuck in a position like you are now. Make every application count and give your best... if the position doesn't look like it deserves your effort, it probably wont be.
To answer your questions, I am currently unemployed and I applied for this job because I am entry level so my choices are limited. Like you said, any job is better than no job. A job like this would make my resume a little better but not as much as the positions that I am waiting on. At first I did have interest in the position and the company. When I saw the place in person, I guess I started to lose interest. I only verbally agreed because I need a job that pays bills.
Well, this is what I would do. If the start date is fast approaching go ahead and start with the company, but don't forget about those other possibilities! go ahead and still interview for other positions. If you get an offer that you want, go for it! You really don't have much loyalty to this company your so/so about just explain to them that another offer came through and it would be in your best interest. I would keep the so/so job off of your resume if you only end up working there a few weeks. This way, you still get some money to pay the bills while you continue the search, and if none of these other offers actually come through then at least you'll have something to build your resume. It's always easier to find a new job when your already employed! I hope this helps you, good luck! | |
