Up Sh*t Creek Rescinded Job Offer

I am up sh&t creek sans a paddle. I recently quit a 140k job with a consulting firm for a 180K job in Afghanistan with a defense contractor. The job offer was firm as opposed to contingent upon the award of the contract. Allegedly, there is no more billeting avail for civilians at the place I was headed to in Afg and since the contract that I was supposed to be monitoring is under protest the positions in AFG have been put on ice temporarily. However, I have been told—via email-- multiple times that I would start the job and I know that some of the people have been rerouted to Kuwait or Iraq.

The hiring manager indicated that he thinks that in a month or at the latest by the new year will the positions will open up again. I perused the contract and it states that personnel must be in three places—only the personal en-route to my destination have been put on hold.

What upsets me is that the job offer was rescinded as opposed to delayed. Why? What should I do? Get something in writing that I will be rehired as soon as the job opens up again in the original or alternative destination. This would be fine—an extra month or two of vacation wouldn’t hurt me if I had a job guarantee.  Ask to speak to a HR person so that I can be fit in elsewhere? The company doesn’t seem to have anything up my alley at this time. The HM is a nice guy and had me take a look at database manager position before the offer was rescinded and passed my info on to another HM but I would be a courtesy fit for the other position. This is ####….Any suggestions. Thanks in advance for all your help.

You can do several things:

  • Start a job search for temporary or permanent employment
  • Contact HR and complain about the position being rescinded
  • Contact either HR or the hiring manager and get a guarantee in writing that the date for starting the job will be between November 1st and January 1st.
  • Contact the HR and confrim that the position has been rescinded and not just delayed at which point you turn around and contact the defense beaurau (sp) and request their help in either filing a claim against the contractor or find someone who can assist you in this.

Almost anything you do is going to run the risk of putting a mark on your record as a troublemaker. For the mere fact that your financial situation is going to be hurting, I would say that risk is the last of what should concern you.
