Accepting an OfferJust recently, I interviewed for a job and right after that they sent me an offer via email. I was so excited and everything happened so fast, because they wanted an answer right away, I accepted. The very next day I found out that the salary I accepted was $8,000 lower then the average for the position, which put me at the bottom 20 percentile. My question is, since I accepted this there a way to go back and try to tell them what I found out? I am going to work here either way, it would just be nice to be given a salary more towards market value. Everything just happend so fast, in a matter of 3 days, I applied, got a call, back, interviewed and hired.
You can still negotiate. Tell the company that you accepted the offer without getting all the information. Employment is at will regardless. Don't be unhappy at the job because you didn't negotiate to what you want - you will be looking for another job pretty soon (I did!).
You accepted an offer without counter offering or trying to negotiate. At this point, there isn't anything that you can do without endangering your working relationship at this company. If you ask for more money now, after you accepted what they proposed with no arguments, you may be told to not bother with starting at the company. If you tell them that the reason is you decided it wasn't enough or that you finally did your homework and discovered that by working for them you would be making less than 80% of people in your position, a question may come up about if you want the job for the job's sake or if you only wanted it because you thought you could get more money. Is this job paying you more than your previous job? If so, then you are ahead of the game. The calculator you used or the national average you saw, does not take into account the area you live in. Some areas may pay more because it costs more to live there. Some areas may pay less because it doesn't cost as much to buy groceries or pay rent/mortgage. | |
