How is this for poor form
I got a call from a recruiter today regarding a position she was working on... She stated that she found my resume on Monster and was working on a Sr. Financial Analyst position... However, here's the catch; she wanted me to provide her with referrals, not actually discuss the position with me. Clearly, since my resume was only recently posted on Monster, she must have assumed that I was looking for a job and it is in my field (I have an accounting degree). It just struck me as poor form to call up someone about a position that they were qualified for and not ask if they're interested first... If she didn't think I was qualified, there's probably many people on Monster that she could have called about the position... This whole situaiton just struck me as very, very tacky. Luckily for the recruiter in question, I was in an interview @ the time so her call went to voicemail; otherwise, she'd have gotten a piece of my mind.
While I can't speak for the specific recruiter you talked to, I can say from experience that when a recruiter calls to tell you about a position and ask "for referrals", it is often code for "I saw your resume and am checking to see if you are in the job market or may be interested in the position. If not, maybe you know of someone who is." Often times, they will not come right out and ask you if you're looking for a new position or if you'd be interested in the specific position she/he's representing. If it were me in this particular situation, when the recruiter asked if you know of anyone who would be interested in the position, I would have spoken up and said, "Yes, I'd be interested in learning more about the position. I think my background would be a good fit for the position you described." And then, go from there. Frequently, recruiters will send out routine queries to people they think would be a good fit for a position. Their thinking is if you're not interested in the position, you probably know of someone with similar backgrounds who might make a good referral. Just a thought.
No... it really did seem like she was looking for referrals. She asked if I knew someone that was interested; most recruiters who call just come out and say that I saw your qualifications and think that you would be a good fit and would like to talk. I've never gotten a calll like this... But I've gotten a few fishing for referrals disguised as I think that you're a good fit. I just think that such calls are tacky. There's more than enough resumes on Monster for recruiters to cold call nor am I sure why the recruiters would think that someone would provide them with referrals if they're totally blowing the person in question off. | |
