HR slow to follow up what do I dohere's the story. I learned of an opening at a local company & had interest. I know people working there, & they tracked down the name of the hiring manager for me. I called him, introduced myself, gave him my experience, etc., & told him that I understood there was an opening but nothing posted yet on their website. He said he was interessted in me, told me to contact HR to start the process. This was a couple months ago. The HR person has contacted me a couple times, but every time she gives me a timeframe & I hear from her much later. Most recently, she called me about 3 weeks ago & said that she was going to be calling me the following week to set up an interview. I didn't hear from her, & was out of town for a couple weeks for my job. I called 1 1/2 weeks ago to follow up with her, got voicemail, & left a message. I still have not heard back. Would it be inappropriate at this point to call the hiring manager directly? I think a more appropriate route would be to contact your friends who already work there and have them make some discreet inquiries regarding the position and if it has already been filled or if it will be. The hiring manager is probably waiting for Human Resources to provide him with a list of candidates and to inform him of when the interviews are going to be held. If the job is still open, he may not want to be in the initial loop. not sure if that's feasible. it's a "friend of a friend" situation. I have a friend who works there, but in a completely different division. He knows someone who works in the area I'm pursuing. The first time around, my friend asked his co-worker who I should contact, but no one actually talked to the hiring manager. I know this is a touchy situation & needs to be handled with tact, but I also don't want to wait too long, and then hear, "it's been filled, you should have contacted me sooner". I would not go to the hiring manager. Although he spoke nicely to you and all, it is clear that in this company, you have to go through HR. That's what you should do. You can certainly call HR again (once a week is acceptable) and see where things stand, but it is likely that since you got on this bandwagon before anything was even posted, the hang up isn't with HR, but above and around them. Someone has to budget for the position, work out the job description, fight with others that want that space for their own things, get things approved, maybe post internally for a while first, then take applications, then look those over, then decide who gets an interview, then schedule those, then see if they need to do more interviews.... some of that happens in HR but most does not. And while the Hiring Manager liked you on the phone (or at least didn't hang up on you) now that he's getting applications you just may not even rank compared to whomever else he has to look at. So, check back with HR again, but don't hang all your hopes on this. Keep looking elsewhere until this or something else comes through. Tess
