Contact current employer

It's on every application anyone has ever filled out, "May we contact this employer?"  Well, if I no longer work for one of those employers then it's a non-issue.  The problem I'm having is if I am looking for a second job (for the time being) or eventually looking to change employers this question will most likely come up.  I would rather not have to explain in too much detail from either employer, or look like I'm hiding something by answering "No."  My current employer does not forbid secondary employment (other than the obvious conflict of interests), but the thought of having to explain to my boss(es) why I'm looking doesn't thrill me (possibly burning the bridge I'm currently standing on).  Secondly, if I told a potential employer (secondary or otherwise) that I would rather not have them contact my current employer it could (in my mind) compromise any idea of trust in me from said new employer.

I don't see it as anybody elses business.  The interviewing company should honor your request for not contacting recent employer.  Employer don't tell you when your terminated do they?

In contract and temporary work it is done all the time, because were always looking for the next job.

"Secondly, if I told a potential employer (secondary or otherwise) that I would rather not have them contact my current employer it could (in my mind) compromise any idea of trust in me from said new employer. "

No, not true. I hire several employees every year and, for the most part all are currently employed. They must have verifiable references, but contacting a current employer - no.  This is an accepted practice in the 'hiring game' so do not hesitate to answer 'no, do not contact current employer.'

Most employers understand if you say no.  If it is a second job, just say that while your current employer doesn' t forbid second jobs, you' d rather not bring it to their attention.  It shouldn' t be a problem if you have other people for them to contact.
