Not asked to complete an application

I traveled out of state to interview for a job that I am very interested in.  Contrary to past experiences, I did not come away with an impression as to whether or not they were still interested in me even though I aced the entire process, including a presentation portion.   The biigest negative in my mind is the fact that they did not ask me to complete an application.  Am i reading more into this than I should?

Not every company has an application to be completed at the initial interview phase. If the job is heavy duty enough, they may want to wait until they have narrowed the field to a select few they are truly interested in. If they ask you for a return interview, you may be presented with an application to fill out at that point.

It saves paper and time. Let's say, for example, that you have been asked to an interview along with 24 other people. (Naturally not at the same time). If all 25 of you are presented with an application that is 3 pages long, plus the credit, criminal and work history background check authorizations which could be up to 2 pages each, that is 225 pieces of paper that is being used.

When the selection of candidates is cut down to only 5, then the amount of paper has been reduced dramatically and is down to only 45 pieces.

Most companies won't bother to check the background, etc until the final selection is about to be made. And the checks can be crucial to the actual decision.

It also saves space within the filing cabinets, because 45 pieces of paper take up significantly less room than 225 pieces.

Thank you for the quick response.  I've considered your points.  They will probably not pay for another flight or 2nd interview as they are only seriously looking at 3 candidates.  However, they I suppose they could wait and only  have the chosen candidate complete the application.  It is a very small software company.  At any rate, I guess I'll have to wait and see if it's me.... Wish me luck

In the job I'm in now, I interviewed with 7 different people over 4.5 months.  I didn't fill out a formal application until about 3 weeks from the end.  That was well after they flew me to a face to face interivew.  There's no standard on that and you shouldn't read anything into it.

Point taken...thank you very much.  I'll keep my fingers crossed.
