How do you get employers interested

I've been unemployed since July 18th 2007 and have been on an intense job hunt in hope of gaining employment in record time. However, that has not been the case as I went on countless interviews and face disappointment whereas the employer will send via email or phone call " we decided to proceed with another candidate." When I go on interviews, I feel as if I conquered and executed all the questions being asked, I ask questions about the company and leave an impression, but what does one have to do to gain recognition from employers? It's frustrating enough that I have seeked options aside from word of mouth from friends who may hear about a job opening and hope to fill in that space to agencies who do there jobs for the first few days and your forgotten; to incessantly applying like a mad-woman online with little to no success. I want to know, when employers view someone's resume` what are the key components they seek to say this is a qualified candidate? What most one do to improve "technique" at interviews that guarantees immediate hiring?
