the online black holeI recently returned to the States after a stint abroad. While still overseas, I sent off my resume to a few positions, hoping I would have at least an interview to come back to but no such luck. I got no reply from any of the organizations. What should be my next step?-- give up and start over or try to follow-up? M-cab. I feel your pain, as I have been looking for 3 months.. Only a few resumes? You are way behind the curve so to speak and should have said a few hundred. I figured this out for sure, looking for a position is a full time job in of itself, and at times require more working hours than if you are already engaged. To me personally, I more relaxed running buck naked through Haditha, Iraq with a George Bush mask on and waving the US flag, than the 100's of possibilities and resumes sent... I just started coming into thses boards today and asked a few questions in different places so my advice?Keep on, Keep on..never give up, you have 400 more to get out there..... G
The unfortunately we only respond to those we want to interview-type message you received sounds like an automatic reply that is set up by the company within their application on-line system to let people know that the resume did go through at least to the computer, but there is no guarantee it is even going to be read. Really nothing you can do as these replies are not monitered and any response from you will be ignored. And, honestly, be happy you even get those. Most employers don't even bother with letting you know that much. Sending out six resumes in one week is a drop in the bucket compared to how many you have to send out in order to receive an actual interview. With the situation as it stands, there are usually over 100 applicants for every one job. You need to make your cover letter and resume as hot as possible. Make sure that the skills and requirements that are presented in the advertisement are represented prominently within your information. Additional skills and abilites, etc should be listed, naturally, but after the sought after ones. Tailor each resume and cover letter to the individual job as much as possible. If you are going to send out a bunch of resumes in a "mass mailing" fashion, then list the skills you believe company would prize above all others first. Even with "mass mailing" resumes, you need to tailor them somewhat to the company targeted. | |
