forensics MD vs RN
My daughter is soph in college...trying to decide on RN for forensic nursing degree or Nurse Anesthetist vs MD pathology career......any ideas on salaries, schools, how to decide?????
Vicki, I can't honestly say I know a lot about the Nursing field, but I can tell you, my sister has been a nurse for over 27 years and can't wait to get out of the profession. She is currently 50 years old and has gone back to school to get her associates in IT. I hear a lot of people are miffed with nursing right now for some reason and that might be why there is such a high turnover and always a need for them. Your daughter might want to look heavily at some of those other areas she's looking at. Just my 2 cents worth.
I can understand why you feel this way....i've been a nurse almost 25 yrs now...worked tele, icu, home health care, cardiology ofc, psyche and now case manager for an insurance company ( for the last 14 yrs) ....i see older (my age) nurses who were in the icu's when i was and i see the new grads and I am honestly glad i got out of nursing when i did....I'm still a nurse and use my nursing judgement/knowledge in the job i have w/the insurance company now. I actually got out of "real nursing" as my kids call it before i got burnt out! My daughter actually is interested in becoming a nurse anesthetist or a physician..actually an anesthesiologist...her real dream is to be a pathologist/md like the ones on csi, etc....i told her those jobs are far and few....but she has her dreams....anyone who has any ideas about this....let me know! vickiballard@charter.net...thanks!
Nurse anesthestist is actually a very lucrative and rewarding career and VERY undermanned. She can practically write her own ticket. There are specific training programs for it now. I believe Emory University has one for it. She should seriously consider it. I would NOT recommend straight floor nursing as everyone else has said: VERY high burn out. The MD pathology job that she sees on CSI probably only exists in 10 places in the country and those people aren't budging and she would be very unhappy in a straight MD pathology job in a morgue somewhere. Good luck to her, there are many rewarding careers but nurse anesthetist is an excellent choice in my book.
My brother is a pathologist and he works 60+ hrs a week very boring stuff. I have a friend who is an anesthesiology nurse and she's done really well. I got injured 2yrs ago and have been out of work since. Nose dive off of an 8 foot wall thanks to some shoddy scaffold assembling. 2 shoulder surgeries and lots of physical therapy. I recently got my LEED Accredited Professional accreditation(I'm in the building business) and Green Building is taking off in my area. I have had a few nibbles but only one interview. Supposed to get a call back this Friday or "definitely Monday". I think I might look into the temp thing I always thought that might not look good on a resume but obviously it would show your up and being productive. Thanks for the input, good advice. Good luck to us all, GreenDav | |
