Need Feed Back On What To Do Please

Two weeks ago I interviewed for a position that I would really like to have.   Both directors, the VP, HR, and head nurse all said they wanted me in the position.  Each time the person who is stepping down from the job cut them off and said "we'll talk."  I followed up with the thank you letters right away to all that I met etc.   The response I got from her was they were reviewing candidates resumes and checking references and she would be in touch.  That was one week after the interview.

Monday will be the two week point.  My job was eliminated so I am not working.  Now I got severance and my vacation and sick time so I have plenty of money that I am comfortable until well into next year (THANK GOD) without filing for unemployment and our field is grossly undermanned so finding another position won't be  difficult.  My hesitation is if I contact a mobile company or contract company and take a job and then this comes through I would have to back out and possibly burn a bridge.

Would it be appropriate to call HR at this first choice (it is my first choice) and just point blank ask where they are at in there selection process and if I am a serious candidate in a professional way so that if I am not I can move on to other opportunities?  Something along the lines of "how they were coming in the selection process as XYZ is my first choice and while my position was eliminated and I was not working if they did need to interview another candidate but still considered me a good fit for the position and a strong candidate I was not in a rush to find a position and was able to wait a while longer for them to make a decision."

Or based upon what they have already said is this a lost cause and should I move on?  Thanks.

What you should say is that you're calling to check on the status of the position.  Leave all the rest of your sentence in your head and not out your mouth.

Thanks Tess.  Thats exactly what I needed to know. smile
