Dont Know What I Want To Do.

I'm 25 years old and I've been at my current job that I've had since graduating college for close to 3 years and I'm seriously starting to look into leaving this job for another and looking into changing careers. So far I've been doing some self-evaluation about what I can do based on my current work experience and I keep coming up blank. I don't know what skills I have that can get me what I'm looking for. Maybe someone here can help me ? This is what my responsiblities  and skills were at my last few jobs

Current Job:   Scanned financial documents and ensured their quality and retrieval. Correctly Logged Documents to Database. Assisted in Special Projects.

Last Jobs Held:   Made numerous calls, twice a week to retailers across the country concerning current releases. Created flyers that were sent to retailers promoting upcoming releases.  Assisted in in-store promotions. Coordinated retail and promotional mailings targeted to retailers and radio stations. Contacted Radio Stations regarding prospective promotions. Created and maintained retail, promotional and press related databases.

It sounds like the skills you used in your previous jobs, like creating flyers and coordinating press and promo mailings are all skills that might be used in a Public Relations or Marketing/Advertising position. It could be you were already in that field and are looking to get away from it, or maybe you've already considered it, so I don't know if that helps at all. But that's what comes to mind reading those skills.

As for your current job, are you looking to move into a different industry entirely or just a different job/employer? Best of luck

Go back to your Alma Mater and see their career center.  If that's not possible, your local community college should have one.  They can do testing with you to determine your skills, abilities, interests and suggest jobs and related fields for those as well as whatever your major was.

It wasn't that I was looking to get away from the Marketing/PR Advertising field. I wasn't able to find a job in that field. I got hired for the job I have and I've been there ever since. Now I'm looking to get out of my current line of work (which is in the financial industry) but since it's been a while since I've worked in a Marketing/PR Position. I'm not sure if I have the skills to work in that industry

Customer/Client Service Skills? You have it

Attention to Detail Skill?  You have it

Ability to Multi-task? You can.

Ability to Prioritize? You can

Creative? You are

Efficient? You are

Able to Meet Deadlines? You can

Team Player? Probably

Bacheldor's Degree? Well you didn't say, but I presume so

Handle Stress? You can

Sell Your Product and Company?  I am sure you can, but you don't say

I wouldn't kid yourself. You will need (and probably should) take some refresher courses to bring yourself up to speed on the changing nuances of Marketing/PR.

Thanks, and I do have a college degree in communications. I have to more questions

1. Where would I find out where I can take these refresher courses ?

2. If I was to look for another job in this field or the field I'm in would I go looking for another entry level-type job ?

I don't know where you live, but I'd suggest looking into jobs at nonprofit agencies. Some of those jobs pay surprisingly well. Check out www.nonprofitjobs.org.

Sometimes that's just the way it goes.  I'm 36 and still don't know what to be "when I grow up."  I'm in the middle of a job/career change right now and it's been very difficult figuring out what to apply for and where my skill set would be most useful. Most of the job postings are very specific as to what they're looking for whereas you and I are kind of "well, I fill in where I'm needed and learn what I need to know to do the job."  I'm plenty smart, but I'm the product of a liberal arts education--no training in anything specific.  :)

That being said, if you like the industry you're in, you may want to consider a) asking for more responsibility from your current employer or b) asking co-workers to show you what they do in a typical day, to train you on things you haven't learned.   This may help you accomplish a couple of things.   Your employer may discover that they have someone who actually is more of a go-getter than they thought they had and help you move up or if you're interested in leaving this employer entirely, it will give you some additional skills to help make you more attractive to your next employer.

There are a lot of marketing/PR opportunities out there across all industries, so find one in an area you find interesting.  If retail marketing isn't your thing, think about working in travel marketing or software marketing or....the possibilities are endless.  You're just beginning, so start working your way up the ladder.   Start networking your way to better positions and opportunities.  Contrary to popular belief, most folks don't come out of college and shoot straight to the top like a rock star (wouldn't that be nice?), so continue to hone your skills and move up and up and up.

Good luck!
