Re approaching a Company

I'm searching for a new job and was recently turned down by an excellent company on the basis that they couldn't supply the salary I'm looking for. Now I've received an offer from another company which can only pay me my previous salary. It's a job offer and I do need a job, but the company and work environment are definitely not what I'm looking for.

Since I spoke to the first company, and based on my job search so far, I've begun to think that I'm probably asking too much in salary and I'm willing to lower my requirement, especially if it means a chance to work for friendlier folks in a more exciting environment.

My question is this: Is it ever a good idea to contact a company that's already turned you down for a particular reason and find out if they're still looking to fill that position and are willing to negotiate? I didn't try to negotiate with the first company when they called to reject my application, just thanked them for their reply and moved on. This was last week, and I've just received the offer from the second company.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

I am kind of in the same boat.  I've applied for a few positions recently that have requested my desired salary but have not heard anything back. I am suspecting that my asking salary is too high.  In fact, I just followed up with one of those companies today, and the hiring manager stated that she was really interested in my resume, but my salary was about 10k too high.  I told her I was willing to negotiate and I now have an interview set up.  In my opinion, you should follow up.  If they were interested in you and the salary was the only issue, I'm sure you'll get an interview if the position is still open.  And if not, at least you tried and you won't be kicking yourself down the road for not following up!

There isn't any major harm in contacting them again, but I really wouldn't hold out any great hopes for them to change their minds. Chances are they have already picked their final candidates if not aready filled the position.

What you really risk is in contacting them again is the employer thinking that you lowering your standards in your worth will lower the standards in your output of work product.

Consider this particular opportunity as having passed and keep your eye out for similar positions with the same company. And, of course, others.

In the meantime, you need something and if you can hold out in a job that isn't exactly the environment you want, take the second offer for some income and keep plugging away. And, remember, just because you think the environment isn't suited for you, once you get in there, you could find out differently.
