Online application extra materials

I'm about to apply for a job that requires an online application and it says, "You may also attach a resume or cover letter with your application," which I will do.

My question is, is it OK to also submit a list of references and/or a recommendation letter, on top of the resume/cover letter? Would I be putting myself in jeopardy for submitting extra materials the announcement doesn't specifically ask for? Of course I'd like to give myself every possible advantage, but I don't want to eliminated for not following the exact instructions either. Is there a rule, or what's the common wisdom on this? Thanks

I don't know if there is an actual rule on sending additional documents, but I personally do not think there is anything wrong with this.

Most on-line applications limit the space reserved for a resume and cover letter, so if the space for enclosing theses documents is limited, it is better to just include a two line paragraph stating that you are in possesion of a letter of recommendation and can furnish references upon request.

If the on-line application actually asks for an attachment from Word or WordPerfect, the list of references and letter of recommendation should go at the end of your cover letter. Include a two line paragraph in the body of your cover letter stating that these documents are included.

The information you should avoid volunteering, unless specifically asked for in either the advertisement or on-line application instructions, is your salary range.

If it is a government position DO NOT attach anything else than what they ask for.  They toss the whole thing if you give them something extra (whether it is electronic or hard copy doesn't matter).  With a company they'll probably take what you give them, but unless you've got something spectacular to insert, it probably isn't necessary and may be distracting or make it look like you're trying too hard.

You're right, I've experienced that the gov't applications are extremely specific and require exact adherence to the instructions. This was for a position with the county library district.

There was a section to attach my resume as a Word doc, so I added a one page cover letter to my one page resume, and attached it as a single, two page doc. It turns out there was a section on the application for references anyway, so that took care of itself. As for the recommendation letter, I just included a line in my cover letter that I could provide one if they would like any additional information. So I think that covers the bases, without it being distracting or looking like I'm trying too hard. Thanks again.
