To apply or not to apply

I just found an ad for a legal secretary position at the same firm that I had applied to a month ago.  They did send me a letter thanking me for expressing interest but the had filled the position for which I applied, will retain my resume for six months...contact if you would like to update your resume during this time.  I would like to express interest in this position but I have some reservations.

My question is, what do I say in my cover letter?  That I recently applied there and would like to be reconsidered?  My resume is the same now as it was then so I really have no updates.  Could it be the same position they had filled and the person didn't work out or is it a new position?  I wonder if they had my resume on file, why wouldn't they contact me?  I have had the happen in the past.  I had applied to a job and it was filled.  A few months later I received a letter from them stating they had another position opened and to contact them if I was interested.  I certainly have nothing to lose by applying again, just need to know how to work the cover letter.

Try to see if you can get ahold of someone there to find out why they are posting the listing again. Perhaps the person did not work out. It would help if you knew why.

Then you could customize your resume more to the position with this new information.

Good luck.
