How do I start a career in Marketing
I have been a tennis instuctor for over 10 years. I graduated college in 2002 with a Bachelors in Business Administration with a concentration in marketing. I have wanted to change careers and I'm looking for an entry level position in Marketing. The problem is most of the jobs posted on monster that claim to be Marketing are just Sales jobs with Marketing in the title, or they require at least 3 to 5 years experience even though they are listed as entry level positions. My question is; how do I get my foot in the door, and where do I find Entry Level Marketing positions. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
The good news is that there are lots of genuine entry level marketing jobs out there. They key is relating what you have done for the last 10 years as an instructor to your future performance as a marketing person. Some of my best marketing hires had limited marketing backgrounds but they were quick studies and were not laden with outdated and traditional "inside the box" thinking. My last marketing coordinator was a soccer player and coach. Her work ethic was outstanding and I taught her the marketing components. She now works in sports marketing for a telecommunications company. Let me know your geographical preference and I'll put my thinking cap on for you. I have pretty much the opposite thing going on. I'm a former VP of Marketing and I'm getting the "overqualified"..."why would you want to do this?" responses.
Thanks for the response. I'm currently living right outside NYC.. I would like to get something locally just to get some experience and then I'm going to move to Austin, Texas (I have family there). You would think that there would be plenty of marketing jobs in the area that I'm in, but its not the case. (At least on Monster, Hotjobs and Carreer Builder) I had a head hunter but he kept on giving me sales interviews that used Marketing in the title. Any help or advice you could give me would be greatly appreciated.
Hi there. I did a preliminary search and saw a few decent marketing coordinator postings and even an internship or two. Sorry It took me a few days to get back to you. Search the site for all Time Warner Divisions and then select your geographic preferences. I did see a few in Texas. Let me know if you see anything of interest. Most of my contacts are in the cable divisions but I know the corporate recruiters too. I spent the majority of my executive career at TWC. Its a great company. Keep me posted if you see anything. http://www.timewarner.com/corp/careers/jobtools_us/index.html All best, Jay | |
