Federal Job process

smile Has anyone here ever filled out the application for a government job or federal job?  What is the whole process?  What are my chances of getting this job (I 100% qualify for the job) even if I have not worked for the government before?  Please let me know your thoughts on this.

Thank you

I just recently applied for a federal job and I was chosen as a qualified candidate and received two interview.  I am still awaiting a final decision.  The process is not difficult however, it is much more detailed than applying for most private sector jobs.  You do not send your application/resume directly to the actual job location. It will be sent to the regional office for that paticular agency. If you are deemed qualified, your resume will be forwarded to the selecting official for further consideration.  Your resume must include specific information that a normal resume would not have.  When I applied, I included my resume, the Optional Application for Federal Employment and a narrative (referred to as Selective Placement Factors or KSA's) and Form SF 15.   If you were a former federal employee, which I am, you need to include your last Notificiation of Personnel Action, (Form SF 15).  When you search for a federal job, the posting will include instructions on how to apply. Check the USA Jobs website at  http://www.usajobs.opm.gov/  you can search for a federal job in your area and find all the details and forms you need to correctly apply for a federal job.  Good Luck!

Thank you for the info.  I did go into USAjobs (great jobs in there) The instructions for the job I applied for was going directly to the job site.  However, all the other jobs similar to the one I applied for was to be sent to Maryland or Detroit.  How soon did you hear from them regarding getting an interview.  Also, do you know what OA stands for.  It is the initials after the job title on some jobs

Again, Thank you for the info.

Your welcome.  It was almost 2 weeks from the date I appplied when I received a letter from the Adminsistrative Office in Ohio.   It was about another week or so when the office called me for an interview.  I still have not heard back after getting a second interview.  They said they wouldn't leave me hanging but I'm starting to feeling that way.

OA stands for Office Automation.  The feds like to abbreviate everything!  Where did you apply and for what position? Are you from Michigan?

Thanks for the info.  I am in Indiana trying for a position with the VA as a Program Support Assistant.  I talked to them yesterday about the process and she said it could take up to 4 weeks for me to get letter about the position and could be up to another 90 days to set something up with me if I am even eligible.  She did say however, it shouldn't take that long, they just give it that long.

Well, good luck to you!  I applied at the U.S. Trustees office in Grand Rapids, MI for a legal clerk position.  Not hearing back by now has been discouraging.

Be patient, be patient, and then be patient. If they tell you two weeks, figure four weeks - or even four months! If you apply at the end of the fiscal year, nothing happens while the books are closed out. If you apply while Congress is fighting over the budget, nothing happens until a new budget gets passed. If somebody is out sick, or on annual leave, or having a baby, or is off on TDY somewhere, nothing happens until that person gets back to their desk. It took me almost six months to get hired but that was 30 years ago so maybe things have gotten a little better.

Thank you.  I will try to be patient.  Easier said then done huh?
