Asked for desired salary now nothing!
I applied for a job on tuesday 9/4 (emailed resume and cover letter). Literally within 15 minutes of sending this the hiring manager emailed me back saying she was very impressed with my resume but before proceeding wanted to know my salary range. I emailed her back that evening with my desired salary range. It is now Friday, 9/7 and I have heard nothing back. I know there could be many reasons that I have not received a response, but given how quickly I received and initial response, I have to jump to the conclusion that my salary range is too high or I would've heard something by now. I plan to wait until next tuesday, which will be one week, and then do some type of followup. Is this appropriate or should I wait longer to follow up? Also, should I mention the salary range if I think it may be an issue or just do a general followup? I am really interested in this job and I match the qualifications exactly. While I don't want to go significantly lower than my desired salary, I might be willing to for the right opportunity. So, I'd at least hope to get an interview to get a feel for the company. I'd appreciate an advice....
You really need to calm down. It is totally unreasonable to expect to hear back in 2 days. Especially during a holiday week. Let this rest a bit and in the meantime, find something else to do, apply elsewhere, etc. If your desired salary is too high you don't want to be there anyway. If they want to interview you, they'll let you know. If you don't hear anything by the end of next week, call on the following Tuesday (on the phone) and ask the status.

Don't read into their silence. It's reasonable for en employer to take time to comile resumes and salary requirements for those they intend to interview. Sometimes this takes a couple of weeks. I think knowing that your salary is out of the position's range is a good thing to know upfront that way you aren't interviewing for a position that you are not a right "fit" for. I've really enjoyed the employers who ask your range right away because they do show a sense of respect for my time as well as their own. I once interviewed for a position that was very interesting to me, however upon commencing the interview I realized I was over qualified and when I was asked if the salary was "acceptable" I had to admit that I wasn't interested. Had I been adequately advised of the position and the salary range prior to the interview I would have known an interview wasn't necessary.
If they were serious you would have heard back by now.
I called the hiring manager today to follow up since I still hadn't heard anything back after she asked for my salary requirements on 9/4. She said that she was really interested in my resume but that my desired salary was about 10k more than what they were looking at. I told her I was negotiable, so she set up an interview with me for monday! | |
