Background Check
Don;t know if this is the correct place to post this. I was given a conditional offer of employment for a job last week pending on a background check and drug test. I have the drug test passed no problem at all. I called up today and asked if they had heard anything back on the background test. They said they are checking my education and employment. The problem was my last job i was terminated and told them that i was let go due to my position being eliminated. Any idea on what they check regarding the employment and education? For employment hisotry, they check reason for leaving, eligible for rehire, dates worked, title, duties, salary (if they can). For education they check if you really attended and really graduated, dates, major. There is at least a 50/50 chance they will find out you were fired and not laid off. If that happens, you will not get this job. Don't lie about things like this. It is far too easy to check.

What they can ask your previous employer varies from each employer and each state. The information that your previous employer can actually give them may be limited to the "from" and "to" dates of your employment, your attendance and the name you gave them. Major companies ask everything from your mother's maiden name to how many papertowels you used after washing your hands in the ladies room. A lot of "accomplished" reference checking individuals are very good at small talk and bringing up areas of your employment which are technically not relevant to the position or even supposed to be brought out in the light of day, but will have an impact on the final decision. You may want to think about contacting the previous employer on your own and asking what it is they can and will say. This will better prepare yourself for the question of why you left and will assist you in figuring out what you should tell apotential employer. | |
