where and to whom to send it

I'm getting a resume and cover letter ready to send out in response to an ad I saw in today's paper.  The job is also posted on the company's website.

The paper ad says to either mail or email application materials to the generic human resources address.

The website says to snail mail to one particular person or to email a different person.

What do you think is the best route?  I was going to call in the morning to get a contact name so that I don't have to address the letter as "dear hiring manager"  Then I thought about using one or the other names.  Pros or cons?  It's vacation season - so maybe I'im better off calling to be sure.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks!

The website says to snail mail to one particular person or to email a different person.

The particular person to whom you are told to use postal service is probably the hiring manager. The person attached to the email is most likely the hiring manager' s assistant. It is probably safer to use the email of the assistant as the manager' s email gets too much traffic and they do not want the resume' s getting lost in the mix.

They are unlikely to be in a great rush since they are accepting postal service resumes. This also is a test of how you follow directions. Meaning, if you find out that the hiring manager is the postal mail person and send it through email to him, you are out of the running.

Send it however you are the most comfortable. Postal mail you don' t have any proof of receipt, with your email settings you can be notified when your resume is opened.
