Relocating with a referral!

I am relocating out-of-state (simply because we want to move closer to my husband's family).  I work for a fairly large (largest in MN) animal shelter, and am hoping to get into a large shelter near our new home in TX.  Strangely, when I let my current employer know that I was leaving, she told me that one of our foster parents used to work at the shelter I want to get into.  She introduced me to this person, who gave me the name of the president of the TX shelter and said I could use her name.  The TX place is hiring for the position I want, but I'm not sure if I should send my resume directly to the president, or to the employment email address and cc: the president!  My current boss suggested I email my resume to the employment address, then send a seperate email to the president and drop the name of the foster parent (Something like "I've submitted my resume to the HR dept, and so-and-so gave me your name as a contact person".  Any thought?

Is the President of the shelter in Texas going to be your immediate boss? Is he a hiring manager?

If he doesn't have anything to do with the actual hiring process, than chances are he will just pass your information onto the apropriate person and may not even bother to give it another thought.

If your boss has told you that the best way to get your resume noticed is to contact the president of the company, then check to see if her name could be used as well. Something of this nature:

"Sally Brandon, of the (insert animal shelter here) and who is my current boss, and April Clark, who worked for you as a dog groomer from March 2000 to September 2005 suggested that I get in touch with you regarding the position of (insert the position here).

I will be relocating to Texas tob e nearer to family in (insert date here) and would like to meet with you about your shelter and the exemplary job that I would do......"

Then finish your cover letter with your finer points. Send it to the president of the company along with your resume.
