Do I tell...

ok, this week i have used up my 26 weeks of unemployment and will have to apply for welfare ($150/month). i hate to sound desperate BUT I AM. I have been out of work since feb 2007 and cant go any more. i have had some interviews etc been to agencies all the usual bee-es (sound it out, LOL).. do i tell potential employers, network contacts etc.. that i have no income etc.. and what am i doing wrong?

No you don' t tell an employer you' re on welfare.  As to what you' re doing wrong, we won' t be able to tell from here.  Go to the unemployment office and get some help.  They have counselors that will sit with you and figure out if the problem is your resume, your skills, your interviewing, if you' re looking at the wrong things, if you need some retraining.

I have been in your shoes. Because I love photography, I went back to my hobby and shot a lot of weddings and sports events. I even sold my images at local art galleries.

Keep on applying and even if it is Home Depot, take the job! A job is better than no job. While you are employed you can still look for your ideal job. I worked retail before I landed my current job. Sure, it may be degrading BUT it kept be from sitting at home feeling sorry for myself.

Never tell hiring managers of your predicament because you will appear desperate. Once employers see that you are desperate you may have a hard time negotiating a good salary.

Tess has given you excellent advice. Learn from her posts. She always gives excellent advice!

From your post it isn't obvious what you might be doing that is right or wrong.

Do you have:

  • a cover letter designed specifically for each postion
  • a resume that is relevant to the job you are applying to
  • references that are solid
  • a positive atttude that shows through to interviewers

Have you:

  • gone through mock interviews to determine where your strengths lie
  • gone through mock interviews to determine where your weaknesses lie
  • had your resume critiqued by a discriminating person who will point out flaws
  • applied to positions that match your skills and abilities

Are you willing to:

  • accept criticism as constructive even if it doesn't mesh with your feelings
  • accept a job that is not exactly what you did prior to unemployment
  • complete tests and evaluations asked by the company to determine your level of expertise

Do you:

  • have a background that needs explanation when checked (criminal, credit, etc)

No, you don't tell prospective employers or your networking associates that you are desperate and just need any old job. Nor do you give them any clue as to your financial situation at the present time, unless it is directly connected to the position at hand. Ie: you are delinquent in your credit card payments because you have not been able to make payments and your job is financially based.

  • a cover letter designed specifically for each postion
  • a resume that is relevant to the job you are applying to
  • references that are solid
  • a positive atttude that shows through to interviewers

i have done all this.
then they always chose someone better.
temp agencies dont call me
headhunters/recruiters dont want me.
no offense but the unemp office wont be of any help.

What a defeatist attitude and every response on this Thread was fine!

No - do not go to the unemployment office.  Go instead to the Workforce Development Board or One-Stop Career Center in your area first thing on Monday.

Ask for help with your resume, cover letter, interviewing skills, job searching methods, everything!  They have workshops and support groups for job seekers and they cost nothing!

Temp agencies, headhunters, recruiting agencies and the like are crap (my opinion) and you would do much better to not pin your hopes and dreams on them. You would do much better by visiting the companies you want to work at yourself, by emailing them, calling them, etc by yourself.

You say that "they always choose someone better". Your job as a job seeker is to make the employer aware that YOU are the "one who is better". With the negative tone of your posts, perhaps the reason you are not perceived as the "one who is better" is because your negativity comes through in interviews. It is coming through loud and clear here.

If you feel down and troubled, that is your right, but you have to keep it out of the interview room and out of your voice on the phone.

"You would do much better by visiting the companies you want to work atyourself, by emailing them, calling them, etc by yourself."

i do...

and i am not neg in the interview.
