I Dont Want To Be A Pest BUT...

I' ve finally got this whole job search thing down.  I' ve updated the resume, kept it simple (easy to scan) and have done everything right.  My cover letters are dead on with each job description and how it relates to my past experiences.  I' ve developed a top five list of companies now hiring, I' d like to work for.  Two of these companies contacted me.  The first, not thirty minutes after I emailed the hiring manager (before I even faxed anything in).  He called and the call dropped...ugh.  I looked it up, no number showed up in the incoming.  Apparently the company with the fewest dropped calls has some issues.  Later in the day, I checked my messages, only to find he left a message requesting to schedule an interview.  I immediately called back and left a message.  The next morning I followed up and left another message.  That afternoon, I left another message.  Two days later...nothing.

This morning, I was going through my email and checked the junk mail box, only to find another one of my applications was responded to the previous day.  The email asked me to call and schedule an interview.  Now, I know this was from the day before, so I called and left a message apologizing about the junk mail problem and gave them my contact info to schedule an interview at their earliest convenience.  This afternoon, I still had not heard anything, so I called and left another message to call me back.  Still nothing.

It' s been a long while since I' ve looked for a job, is there something I' m missing?  Should I keep calling and bugging them until they have no choice but to call me back?  After all, after receiving my resume and cover letter, they contacted me.  Could they have just changed their mind on a dime?  What gives?

Confused.

Look up their websites and find the main phone number. Call and ask the receptionist if the person you need to speak with is in the ofice. Stuff happens. He may have needed to leave. He may have needed to call in sick. He may be in meetings. At the very least, I think he should have instructed someone to contact you back and let you know that he was tied up.

One time, I called to speak with a specific person and it turned out that she had informed the receptionist I maybe calling and had given the information to the receptionist to give to me.

Anyway, call until you can talk to the person or his/her assistant. If you keep leaving mesages, it is just going to be a constant game of tag.

Oh, and yes, in this day and age of incredibly unprofessional employers, it is not unheard of them changing their minds on a dime and not informing a person.

I had this happen to me as a hiring manager. The candidate was not available so I told her to call or email me. I was sent on an emergency business trip to another country and was going to be out of the office for three weeks. Although my voice mail told candidates I would be out of the office, many left 4-8 messages on my answering machine. I also checked my voice mail messages while on my business trip but did not have the time to call the candidates back. In this case, I asked my secretary to call them back and I would be back with them in a few weeks.

I would call periodically BUT don' t make yourself a pest. Leave a brief messages and let it go at that.

Thanks for the input.  As I stated in my message, these are two back to back requests for an interview from two different companies.  I find it very strange that I haven't received a response from either since the intial contact.  However, I left both alone for the remainder of the week.  Instead, I faxed in my resume with the cover letter and mailed it in as well.  These are two potentially great jobs.  I'll follow up on Monday.

Thanks for the input.
