Getting a interview

Here is my problem, I' m a 50 yr old male, that has been out of the job market for more than 20 yrs. I have had my own business' but now I would like a job, I will be keeping my business going, but it only requires, a few hours a week of my attention.

I have a very varied background, everything from heavy equipment mechanic, corporate sales, plumbing, electrical, commercial and residential maintenance and repair, and my current business is home rentals.

I have applied for everything I can think off, and not even a No Thank You from any,, I even applied as a Valet, parking cars at the hospital, not even a phone call. I need some one to tell me what I' m doing wrong? Or I' m I just out of luck?

Start with your resume.  You can post it (minus name, address & phone) over on the resume board for some good (free) advice.  Then look at what you' re applying for.  You need to apply for things that you' re totally qualified for and your resume needs to illustrate that.

I have a very diversified back ground also.

I chose to have my cover and resume reviewed by a professional writer. The main thing on a cover is it should coordinate with what the company is looking for. Use buzz words associated with the position. Make sure the employer knows you can fill the requirements of the job just by looking at 1 page.

The, the key is to strategies your background around the job description. Get a copy of it. Study it and highlight the areas you have done before. The company wants to see if you can do the job BUT, they want to see if you have had experience doing it before!

First, be sure to apply for jobs that are suited to your skills and experiences. For example: if you have never worked with PowerPoint of Spreadsheets -- do not apply for jobs where these two skills are foremost in the job description.

Next, use a resume that showcases the skills and experience you posses that are also what the company has asked for, but also make sure that your other skills are readily accessible. Custom your cover letter to highlight these skills.
