Changing Careers How do I start

As some know I am a 25 year degreed accountant.  After a few weeks of not finding work and going on itnerview after interview I am seriosouly considering a total turn around for my career path.  I have been in the hospitality field for many years before I was an accountant and I think I would enjoy working as a recruiter - either someplace with a firm or inhouse.  Any suggestions on making such a drastic career change?

Thanks

How about having an informational interview a recruiter or two, just to see if you like the day to day aspects of the job.  Recruiting was my first job out of college, and it is not for everyone.

Also, if you are getting interviews but no offers, you might want to ask the interviewer what you could have done better, or skills you might be missing.  We were encouraged to do that during the MBA recruiting process.

I did ask and I get no answers back - they don' t want to risk a lawsuit I guess - I KNOW why I lost two job offers - they checked my credit and I know that for a fact - the same company for two different positions.  I honestly think that credit checks should be outlawed and illegal as all hell - the fact that I had some hard times and other personal things going on in my life 2 years ago does NOT erase the previous 47 years of perfect A-1 credit and in no way affects my abilities or skills.

I already emailed a couple recruiters that I actually LIKE to ask them for their input too

Yikes!  I think it is terrible that they link credit to job performance.  I had a bad spell with credit right out of undergrad that took me several years to clean up.  Boy did I learn my lesson!

Anyway, I can tell you that my experience as a recruiter was so-so.  It was over 10 years ago, but it really irked me that I was placing people with less education and skills than myself at jobs paying considerably more than what I was making.  I was working at a temp agency, so that might be different than working with more professional level prospects.  The best thing about the job was the networking and learning about all different types of career paths.  I had an art degree, so I really had no exposure to business before that.  The recruiting job eventually led to a great job at a bank that launched my career in the right direction.

I think you really have to be a people person to succeed at recruiting.  If I remember correctly, my friends in the professional level recrutiing practice said there was a lot of cold calling and trying to persuade people to hire your candidate or get a candidate to leave for your corporate client. So, there is a definite sales aspect to it.  If that is what you like, then go for it!  Never to late to make a shift to something new.

Yeah criminal background I can understand totally but not credit.  When I was looking for employment over 8 years ago the last time they didnt do the credit checks and I was shocked when they did them this time.  Oh well.  Thanks for the advice.  Not sure what I am going to do right now.  I have a month or so before I am out in the streets.  :)
