New job not a good fit
Hello, I recently graduated with my MBA (May 2007) and have been working at my new job for 2 months. I already know it is not a good fit on several levels, even though I am constantly told that I am talented, well liked, and that they have big plans for me. The company is highly decentralized all across the country and I work in an office of only 6 people, so transferring to another department is not at option (ie. relocation is not an option due to my spouse's high salary and great job). It also doesn't help that I don't like the common practices in my employer's industry. In addition, the position is very stressful, I have had no training, work very long hours, and I have been asked to do things that are not exactly ethical. I really want to quit, but I am afraid of walking away from an $85K+ job without something else in hand. I have never had to leave a position before for reasons other than a spouse relocation or going back to school, so this whole process is new to me. The question is, how do I go about looking for a new job? Should I leave my current position off of my resume? I have done some interesting things and made a measureable impact already, but I am afraid that I will passed over since I have only been there a short time. My thoughts are that since I am a recent graduate, it won't look so bad to now have a current job on my resume. I will also have to deal with a slight complication: I have a broad non-compete agreement that prohibits me from working for any company that does anything that my employer or any of its affliates or subsidiaries do for 6 months. So that pretty much means almost anything in financial services. Good news is that my spouse and I have enough money saved to do that. Going back to school for another semester is an option as well. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks. Not really advice because it sounds like you know all your options but its just a matter of sitting down and thinking but I jsut wanted to comment to not leave them off the resume - you can always tell new places that you left to go back for further education but they will show up on a background check and anyone would wonder why you left them off. To not burn any bridges since this company does like you and have good plans for you - maybe the job itself isn' t a good fit but something else might be - then ask the supervisors what your options are and tell them also that the reason you are leaving, if you do, is to pursue more education - that way they will give a good reference and even might move you to a new position I have a mba and I was offered less than that and my fiance earns 6 figures but, I would make it work for 85K I tell ya. Do not give up on the job just yet. 2 months is a relative drop in the bucket. It appears that you are aware of the reasons you do not feel it is a good fit and that makes you in a good position to sit back and see if you change those reasons. Or at least tailor them to make it more reasonable for your to stay. Go ahead and start to send out resumes again but be sure to list your present job because it will show up on a background check. Even a preliminary one. Plus, it will look better that you did not just quit after only a couple of months. How broad is the non-compete agreement? It says that you cannot be employed at a company that you employer, its affiliates or its subsidiaries do, but does it say tht you cannot apply for jobs at the affiliates or subsidiaries? Is it stated in the agreement that you will not work for those companies, period and end of story or does it read that you cannot work in the position you currently hold in those companies?
Yeah, I'm trying to hang in there for at least a year. I have to get out though, since the industry really isn't where I want to build my career. When I was being interviewed during recruiting season at school, I was told I wound be doing something quite a bit different. Hopefuly the stress won't cause too many health problems! I was just on a business trip with some other people from the corporate office, and they said that my boss can be challenging to work for. Makes me feel better that its not just in my head or something. I can apply for other positions in the company, but it would require a move half way across the country since I am in a satellite office. Moving is not an option since my spouse has a great job that he likes. Anyway, I am sure it will work out eventually. | |
