Returning to former employer

Left my former job several months ago on very good terms, and my supervisor and senior management I worked for told me several times the door would be open to return. They made a thoughtful counteroffer, but the offer offer was too difficult to turn down financially.

We've stayed in touch, and I've realized that my new position (and boss that I have great difficulty working for) is just not a good fit. While the money here is better, my former company had a more professional and positive work environment and the work was more fulfilling.

I'm having lunch with my ex-boss this week (her schedule was busy during the time I gave notice, so this was a belated thank you/good luck get together). How do I re-visit the conversation regarding the possibility of returning and seeing if the counteroffer is still viable? Numerous contacts there have told me I am seriously missed, and the feeling is mutual.

There is undoubtedly going to be a point at your lunch when your old boss is going to say something to you like: "How are things going with the new job? Do you like it?"

It is at this point that you can say: "I have met some very nice people and have learned some very interesting things. I do have to admit, though, that I am a bit disappointed in the somewhat unprofessional and negative environment of the office. It really makes me uncomfortable to the point where I just don't feel that I am fitting in."

Ex-boss: "I'm sorry to hear that. If there is anything that I can do to help, please don't hesitate to ask."

You: "I was hoping that you would say that. When I left, everyone stated to me that I would always have a home at (insert your old company's name). I was hoping that the offer you made me before I left is still valid."
