anyone else sick of rude companiesforgive me while i vent for a moment. i am a degreed professional with nearly ten years of experience under my belt. and in the past 9 months, i think i have encountered pretty much every rude company in this country. i have been flown from one coast to another, been put up in fancy hotels, been told sweet nothings about how i'm each company's "top candidate" and how they don't want me talking to anyone else until i see their offer. so i sit...and i wait...and nothing happens. this has happened to me with 6 different companies since the beginning of the year. with each of these companies, i have emailed and called and practically sent carrier pigeons trying to get information on what was going on since everything seemed so fabulous when i was in their office. with one job in particular, the guy that interviewed me was so evasive, i had to email the travel coordinator who booked my airline and hotel to see if this guy was even still working at the company. but with each and every one of these jobs, no one will give me the time of day. emails and phone calls go unreturned indefinitely. and i check the websites for these companies, and the jobs are still posted, in some cases for almost nine months now, so it's not like they went and hired anyone else. but i just find it remarkably rude that a company would spend all this time and effort to interview me multiple times, often flying me to their office to meet personally, and then not even have the courtesy of telling me that they've either put the position on hold or just aren't interested anymore. what's even more frustrating is that at least three times in the past couple of months, companies have contacted me for phone interviews, only to not follow up to schedule them, or in one case, blow off the scheduled interview all together. a perfect example is three weeks ago. i had a large company email me to schedule a phone interview and asked for my availability. i promptly emailed her back and made myself available for anytime they'd like to talk that week (this was a monday). i never heard from her again after that. i even sent a follow up email to make sure she received my first email, but didn't get a response to that one either. am i the only person in the world to think this is just horribly rude? right now i'm in a holding pattern for a job that my recruiter has been working with me on since march. it happens to be in the same town my parents live in, so while i was visiting them last month, my recruiter managed to set up an interview for me with this company. when i went in for the interview, they thought i was perfect for the position. they actually had me come back the following day to meet with more people and to take an IQ test, personality test, background check, etc. the whole thing. out of my 3 1/2 day vacation up there, i spent 2 full days in their office. once again i heard how fabulous of a fit i was, and they told my recruiter they were preparing an offer package. but now it's 4 weeks later and i haven't heard a thing since i left. my phone calls and emails have gone unreturned. my recruiters phone calls have gone unreturned. we know they aren't interviewing anyone else (they told me this while i was up there), but i can't figure out why they'd be so rude as to not even say "hey, it's going to take a couple more weeks". meanwhile, i don't know if i should be preparing for a quick cross-country move (which i would be paying for myself, so it's not a relo issue). i just give up. i've thrown my hands up in the air and have resigned myself to the fact that there aren't any companies out there that will treat candidates with respect anymore. what happened to having a little integrity? what happened to common decency? am i asking for too much here? am i the only one that's experiencing this? No you are not alone by a long shot in your thinking and being disgusted. One thing I would suggest - when a company tells you to not talk to anyone else or the recruiter is supposedly working on a deal since March just nod and say ok - then apply apply apply and interview when you can. Why would you wait for a recruiter or any company to put your life on track ? They could care less as they have already demonstrated. Good luck ! The first thing that comes to mind is they are finding something a background check that they don' t like, and they' re afraid to ask you about it because it might cause some kind of embarrassment or legal wrangling. Could be something simple that' s not technically bad, so they just want to dodge it by playing dead. Maybe you can ask a recruiter what' s not on your resume that could make companies have cold feet. Again, it could be nothing, but somehow these companies THINK it' s something and they' re scared away. Worst case scenario: They' re doing a background check and pulling up someone ELSE' s records that ARE bad, and attributing that to YOU. A paperwork or database error could be sabotaging your efforts. It just seems nuts that places that would fly your across the country, interview you again and again, would just fall off the map. Something very, very odd is going on here...you may want to hire a someone to conduct a background check on yourself and see what turns up.
I do not get flown all over the country for interviews, but my treatment seems to be similar to yours. I have 2 jobs I made it to the final decision and have not heard anything from them for 3 months. Others have waited 6-8 weeks before responding to any emails or anything. Honestly I hate dealing with employment agencies. Those recruiters are as rude as anyone I have seen. HR in most companies are not much better though. I've notice this too. This trend seems to have started some time within the last two years. I don't think it has anything to do with skeletons in the candidate's closet. My record is clean but I either get an offer the next morning or I never hear from the company again. In my case I know it has a lot to do with the position not really being available. I've been in the industry long enough to know people who can tell me what is really happening behind the scenes. Either the contract hasn't been awarded yet, or the job is already outsourced, or they have an internal candidate picked out, or the position needs to be filled but there is a hiring freeze. This has always happened but I think companies are ashamed to admit it. You all are correct, in that, companies may or may not even have the requisition numbers, to hire a person into that position. Req numbers ensure the amount portioned out, for the salary of said position, etc. I find it highly surprising however, that companies would do so much to "woo" you or "court" you, then you hear absolutely nothing from them afterward. I would ask the recruiter, or anyone who would not mind, yourself, to check your background thoroughly, you would be surprised, hopefully not. I remember I was going for this sales associate position, that required NO driving, but to be in a call center, for my 8 hours a day. Well, this is a pretty big telecommunications/phone company. I got the job, but HR literally called me regarding a speeding ticket, I got back in 2004! Had not had one since, had not had one PRIOR to that! They were like, well, we don' t think this should prohibit our extending a job offer to you, but nonetheless, we just wanted to inquire about it. I was like SHEEZZZ!!!! Check your background, criminal, CREDIT !!! You will be surprised the number of employers, who perform credit checks on job applicants. If you have made it to the interview, if not a second or third, by then, you have given them your social security number, so, they know. Some of us already know how these things stand, but I can tell you, seems like the tighter the job market gets, the more they "find" to rule you out as an employee. I agree...I know it's not anything in my background check because at my current job I had to go through a massive background screening and I was completely clear. And typically the recruiter I'm working with checks my references, so I know it's not that either. I think it really boils down to these companies not being serious about hiring. I think they're all holding out for the "perfect" candidate that will solve all of their problems, but then also work for nearly free. I've also had a lot of companies tell me that I'm exactly what they're looking for, except they wanted to spend $20k less for the position. I'm sorry, but that's nearly entry level pay, and I have almost 10 years of experience. I just don't know at what point companies felt that it was perfectly acceptable to just blow people off. And I'm by no means waiting around for these companies either, I apply to everything I can. But to be put in this position 6 times in as many months signals (to me at least) a real breakdown in the integrity of companies these days. If they treat candidates this way, how are they treating their actual employees? I guess I'm just utterly frustrated because I don' t know what it's going to take to get a response out of these people. In my current silent treatment scenario, I'm at the point where I don't even care about the job as much as I want to be shown a smidgeon of respect and have them give me or my recruiter a definitive answer. I think I deserve at least that. And as unpopular of a thought as this may be, I feel bad for recruiters in some way. They get paid for getting me hired. If they spend months of work trying to place me with a company that isn't serious about hiring, think of how much time and money they've lost. And granted, I've been fortunate to work with recruiters that truly bust their a$$ for me, but even the slackers I can understand if they've been burned by a couple of companies. Well again, the only thing that is so puzzling to me is, why would they go all out, like you have described, just to be rude enough, not to even answer your responses??? From my experience, both on the inside, and the outside, they are not going to fly someone out, put them in a hotel, just for rinky dinks, this is usually a serious candidate that they have pinned to hire. Now, I agree, burger King is now even looking for the best and the brightest, so it is also a possibility, and not quite as shocking, if they found another candidate. To not thank you, or advise to you that another candidate was chosen, is very untactful, rude and distasteful.
The problem is that they are letting unqualified people make the decisions. I recently applied for a sales job at a maintenance supply company. I was told by the HR person that I did not have the qualfications they were looking for. I have spent 20 years in maintenance and know there catalog inside and out. I also have 5 years experience in sales for a supply house. I have put out over 300 resumes ( professionaly written resumes) in the last month and have recieved 2 responces. Both companies also said they would set up an interview with me and I have not heard back from them. My dads generation went to work and he took care of the company and they took care of him. now its who can screw who first. It's a sad world we live in. well, i at least got my answer today, albeit it wasn't what i wanted to hear, and basically only reinforces my ideas about these companies. i got a very polite phone call from the hr manager informing me that, while they really liked me and would love to keep me in mind for the future, it was decided that the position wasn't going to be created after all. they just finished up doing their '08 budget and this new position wasn't included in the budget. now, i'm sorry, isn't that something you figure out BEFORE you hire a recruiter, put up a listing and spend 5 months interviewing me? they did the background checks, they called my references. but it's only now that they figure out they can't create the position? seriously, what is going on with these companies? | |
