Could this have ruined my chancesI apologize in advance for the lengthy post, but I really need an objective opinion please! Quick preface: I was laid off from a freelance job recently due to a couple reasons: budgetary , but also because of personality fit (my manager and I just didn' t see "eye to eye") I was told I did my job very well, but they couldn' t find the money to keep me and the personality thing sealed it. I was fine with that, and told them I would seek unemployment benefits; they balked and were NOT happy about it and made that very clear to me. Fast forward a couple weeks, I went in for an interview for a terrific job. I filled out the application but regrettably did not put down my last employer' s phone number due to the above reason (regretting this now!) but put down all my other past employers' ; didn' t think anything of it. The first interview went very well, and I explained to all that I was laid off for budgetary reasons. I was called in for a final interview a week later, which went great as well. As I was leaving HR told me they' d discuss me, then if all went well, call my references. She then said she noticed that I didn' t put down my last employer' s phone number on the application and if she could have it. I completely forgot that I didn' t write it down and briefly explained that she definitely could have it, but if she did call they might have a skewed bias on me because I was attempting to file for unemployment. She said she' d keep that in mind. I emailed her with the phone number and emails without prompting soon thereafter, as I wasn' t trying to hide anything, though I could see where it might look like I was. (sigh) A week has gone by, I followed up and she said "thanks, the process is taking longer than expected, I' ll get in touch when I learn more" HR jargon. I called my other references (all great other than my last freelance position) and they haven' t been contacted at all. Question is - did I blow it by not putting the number down and then explaining honestly about the unemployment issue? Could something that small really blow everything else that went terrifically out of the water? Or could it be anything and I' m overanalyzing? Has anyone else go through a similar situation? I' m dying here! help? If you listed your former employer but just didn't list their phone number, it is probably not a big deal. If I were in the hiring position and felt you were the top candidate, I would have taken your comments at face value and called your references. My guess is that you are not the top candidate and they asked for your former employer's phone number just to complete the application. | |
