Didnt give notice

I have been temping for the last 3 years - my choice - but now want to settle in to a permanent position.  At my last job, I left without giving the customary two weeks notice - actually I emailed my boss the day I decided to quit.  When I left it was two weeks after returning from medical leave due to a back injury.  The night before and up to the moment I sent the email, I was experiencing heart palpitations and chest tightness.  After the email, I went straight to the temp agency and all of those symptoms disappeared. I have never left a job like that before, and don't know how to address it when interviewing, which of course is costing me some great positions. I know I can't say the real reason I did it, which was "My boss was a Napoleonic, neurotic twit who wanted perfection and maid service who eventually drove me to a nervous breakdown".  What do I do?

Have you got good references from the temp?  Don' t list Napoleon as a reference, pad the list with more recent employer, or, better yet, friends who will lie for you.

If you quit because of these symptoms, and you told the agency that was the reason for doing so, then that is the reason that you use.

You need to be careful because a prospective employer will want to make sure you are healthy enough to work for them without the health issues arising again.

You are probably better off avoiding a temp agency because even though the health reason may be legitimate, you left the agency holding the bag and no other agency will want to be in that position.

I'm sorry for the confusion - Napoleon is the boss from my last permanent position, which lasted about 15 months.  The day I quit that one, I went to resign with the temp agency and have been working through them ever since for the last 3 years.  I'm afraid that telling a prospective employer that my last permanent position stressed me out, because then they will think I can't handle pressure and stress.

Another problem is that the first #### the temp agency placed me in was an indefinite #### - I've been at this same #### for the last 3 years.  When interviewing, they are happy to use this company as a reference, but they also want the previous employer, which winds up being my neurotic former boss.
