background checks

I think this is not the right board for it but I did not know where else to put it. So i interviewed for a position and I didnt get a  call back for like 2 weeks or so, so i called the manager and asked if the position has been filled in yet and she told me that she actually wanted to hire me but she cant give me the ok until i think the HR department finishes conducting my background check, shouldn't this only take a couple of days? and I was wondering what do they actually look for in background checks besides if you got in trouble with the law. thanks in advance.

It depends on what they mean by "background check". For some jobs, it involves court records, driving records, credit history and reference checks. If security clearances are involved, they go even deeper.

If it is a large company hiring a lot of people, it could just be a matter of time.

I agree. It involves all of what was mentioned plus things like past employment history, etc.  Some background checks can even bring up every job you' ve had for the last 7 years.  I had an applicant that had HR do a background check on and found out that there were 3 jobs that he had and they were not listed on his resume' or on his application.  He probably didn' t list them because he had accidents in company vehicles at all three jobs.  Nonetheless we weren' t able to hire him because of his accident record and lying on his application.

I think the part where most people get afraid is the credit portion of the background check.  I don' t really think credit plays a big part in most people' s getting the job or not.  UNLESS, the job you' re going for is something dealing with money or if the company wants to issue you a company credit card.  If the company wants you bad enough some will overlook your bad credit history and just ask you to use your own funds to cover expenses and get reimbursed later.  Other companies want you to be able to get the company credit card and if you can' t get it because of poor credit they won' t take you.

It may also include calling all your references and former employers.  If they' re playing telephone tag that can take a while.

Regardless, it takes as long as it takes.  Keep looking in the meantime, but this does sound promising!
