Reference Checks

Can anyone shed light on a situation for a worry wart.

Interviewd last Thursday than they called Friday said they would proceed with reference checks. All reference checks are done what is next?  Great company and I really want the job.

So, do you want to start a Worry Wart Club with me?

You are in the same, exact situation I am.  I interviewed for a job with a small company on Feb 5th.  I had a second interview last Thursday with the owner' s father (I think he is a silent partner.  They had a large family owned manufacturing business they sold several years ago, and the son bought this ongoing business.) At the end of the interview the father asked me for references, and said he was going to call them.

As of today, haven' t heard a thing.  I don' t normally bug people after interviews, but I really want the job too.  I sent the son an email today just asking for an update.  I told him I didn' t want to be pushy, but financially, I am going to have to get a temp job again within the next week or so, and didn' t want to start a job if there was a chance he was going to hire me.

So, if they checked your references, and everything panned out, the next step should be that you probably will be getting an offer soon.  I hope it works out for you.  Good luck!!!

I just went through the same thing a week or two ago.  They called all my references as well.  It was two or three days later that they called me back to inform me of the next step.  I wouldn't think they'd call your references if they weren't serious about you.

First, are you worried about what your references said? If so, you should always know what they will say and if there is any chance of negativity, you either deal with that up front with the interviewer or don't use that reference.

If you feel the references were good, I would suggest that you are in a fairly good place. I don't call references unless (a) I have a chosen candidate or (b) I have two candidates that are so equally matched that their references may help me make a decision.

Your next step is to call them and say "My references tell me that you have spoken to them. I hope they were able to answer any questions you had regarding my abilities. Is there any other information you need from me before making a decision?"

Have you checked with your references to see if they' ve been called yet? If not, I' m sure it means they have been too busy. You know how it goes with these small companies--they can be great to work for, but getting anything out of the ordinary done can take forever!

I' m thinkin' of you & keepin' my fingers crossed!

No, I haven' t called my references.  I usually don' t. When I have previously, they told me no one has called them.

I  actually have  two women I worked with at the position I quit that I am using.  One started her own design firm and left there six months before me.  The other one is still there. I was going to call her, anyways, because It turns out they have had two ads in the past few days, both on Monster and Craigslist, for a replacement for my replacement.  (He was hired about four months after I left, and only lasted ten months!!!)

Thanks for the encouragement. It' s really starting to get to me.  I had applied for an accounting position with a city about 15 miles from my home the end of January.  I got through the phone interview a week ago.  I was supposed to go in for a 15 minute Pre-Employment computer test yesterday, and if I scored over 70%, interview after. Well, the first part of the test I know I aced.  It was 100+ questions of showing if two numbers were the same or different. You had 7.5 minutes, and I think I got 102 done out of 105.  The second part of the test was having to solve 25 math problems in 5 minutes.  Now, these were actual word problems, that are about a paragraph long, and you could only use paper to solve.  Thus, you had what amounted to 12 seconds each to both read the whole question, and get the answer.  I only got 13 done in the time allowed.  In my opinion, Einstein himself couldn' t have solved 70% correctly in the time allowed.

The guy who was supposed to interview me came out and told me I failed, so he couldn' t talk to me.

I was really furious.  I have never failed any employment tests.  I normally pass them with flying colors.  So, I wrote an email to the head of the HR department when I got home, in which I told them they ought to reevaluate their testing procedures.  The guy who was supposed to interview me ended up calling me back last night, and apologized.  He said the system was having a problem scoring the tests yesterday afternoon, and he didn' t realize it, because he had been out of the office previous to my coming in.  He invited me to interview with them tomorrow.  I' m probably going to interview just for the principle of it.
