When it Rains in Poors

I applied for a job online that fit my field of interest. I received a phone call 2 days later from the hiring manager and set up an interview for the following week. I went to the interview and spoke with him for quite a while about the open position. He then called in the general manager and I spoke with him for another half hour. They said they would call if they had any questions. I left the interview feeling really good. They both seemed to really like what I had to say. I called a week later to follow up and spoke with the hiring manager. He thanked me for "following up" and said he would call be soon. Another 2 weeks went by and no call. I decided to email the HM and told him that I was still very interested in the position. I highlighted my strengths and what the company could benefit from by hiring me. I received a phone call the following day from the hiring manager. He seemed very eager to speak with me again and we set up  a second interview for the following day (today). I was almost positive that I would lock down the job this time. However, he called me at noon today (2 hours before the interview) and canceled. He said he needs to see how things will go next week and will get back to me to reschedule. I was devastated! I thought I had this one in the bag! To top it all off I was just LAYED-OFF from my current job this afternoon. I need some advice on this one. Should I keep pursuing the job or let it go and move on??? What does he mean by "I have to see how things go next week"?

Unfortunately, many times job seekers think that a pleasant or positive interview means you have the job in the bag.  It doesn' t.  There may be other candidates they' re considering, there may be issues at the company and he may not have approval to fill this position (or someone else may be trying to steal his approved spot away), there may be someone internal they have to consider first, etc.

Apply to other jobs, attend other interviews.  If this pans out, great, but don' t put all your eggs in this basket.

Now that you are unemployed you need to kick into job hunting mode.  Keep building the relationship with this company --follow up in a wekk if you do not hear from them.  TODAY you ned to write a thank you not to the manager and express that you are looking forward to continuing to explore possibilities in his company.

As being unemployed you need to

1) get on unemployment insurance,

2) tighten up your resume, cover letter, interview skills, networking, etc,...

3) go take a tour of your one-stop unemployment center, they often have workshops, resources and sometimes 1-1 advice...

4) assess your finances, make sure you budget, if needed, contact your creditors and let them know you are unemployed giving them an estimate of when you might need to talk to them about payment plans, etc... ("I am unemployed and wanted to give you a heads up.  I have resources to meet my obligations for the next x months.  Hopefully I will get a job before that time runs out but if I start getting close to that time, what would my options be about temporarily adjusting my monthly payments."
