Call the recruiter or manager

I interviewed for a position on Jan 18th I was told it would take a month or more to find out who they are hiring. I contacted the recruiter on the 21st of February and I asked for an update if they hired anyone for that position. He told me they are still interviewing. Do you guys think it's best to get an update from the recruiter, or call or email the manager doing the hiring. I don't want to bother people, but this is a good opportunity for me and I am having other companies showing interest. Should I just let it come to me and wait for them to call me? If you think I should call what would be a good time period, What should I do? The recruiter works for the company. It's an internal recruiter.

If they were still interviewing last week, this is going to take a long time.  Keep looking at other things and don' t wait around for this one to come through.  It may never.  You can call again on Tuesday and see what the status is and ask when you should check back again.

CAll the recruiter.

I'd call the manager and here's why.

If you were a real viable candidate, or even one of the top choices, they wouldn't let you sit for 7 weeks. They have either hired someone and are seeing how they work out or they have not seen anyone worth hiring.

Calling the manager will not hurt your chances because, frankly, your chances of getting the job are slim and none. Calling may spark some interest with the manager but probably not with the recruiter.

When you call, make sure you have something that catches his interest, not just "can you tell me the status of the job?" kind of comment. Try to remember what was important in the job and immediately relate that to your experience.

What do you think about a short email instead of a call? They are hiring 3 positions. These positions have been advertised sense Oct. 06 They hired 1 so far. They did tell me if I was a 100% fit they would contact me with in 2 weeks. So I' m on the back burner.
No on the email. Pick up the phone and call. If you're not a 100% fit, be ready to explain why your 90% fit is better than a 100% it.
I think that the manager is the quickest path. However you will never reach certain manager without the recruiter... so depends on the company. You see it quickly. If they pay an external staffing company, better go through the recruiter, if not, better go to the manager directly.

I would suggest emailing only because it goes straight to the person without having to get through a gate keeper.  The manager may not take your call but I bet he will see the email.

Another great option is to find an industry related article in a trade publication, magazine or newspaper, write a brief summary including an explanation why it would be of interest to him/her.  This keeps your name fresh on his mind and shows your interest in the position.
