Questions regarding upcoming interview
Hello everyone, I have an interview on Thursday within the IT department for a schooldistrict. At the moment I'm debating on what to wear, I usually wouldwear black dress pants, a dark blue shirt, and a tie. I've beenthinking that the colors are too flashy, and was debating on going withsomething that is lighter in color like tan pants and a lighter blue orwhite shirt. I've also been told by friends that I could get away withkhaki's, which they feel would be a better fit for the work that I'mgoing for. The other item that I'm now worried on. I just had a phone interviewwith another company which revolved around determining my technicalskills and customer service skills. I received a response stating that they would not be bringing me in foran interview. They felt that I had all of the technical skills for thejob, but they felt I was lacking the customer service experience. Eventhough I explained my last position dealt with alot of customerservice, I still seemed a little stumped on how to portray thisexperience to them. In other words, their main concern was if I couldhandle irate users. Ok, first of all, I would suggest you wear the black slacks but with a bright white shirt and nice tie. The tie should not be flashy or too colorful. Make sure your shoes are clean and shined. Also make sure your clothes are not wrinkled and well pressed and clean. If you have a sport coat, that would be a nice touch. It's always better to overdress for an interview, even though you know you won't be wearing those types of clothes if you get the position you are interviewing for. On the second issue, I'm not sure why they would say you didn't have experience in the customer service area if you specifially stated you had customer service experience. Did you back up your statement, prove that what you did at your previous position was deal with the public? It's very easy to deal the irrate users/customers...just give them what they want. The customer is always right!!!
Thank you for your advice. I decided to go out to a department storelast night and ask a few different opinions on what is the best thingto wear, which they all suggested the black pants and white shirt likeyourselft. Not sure why I was trying to wear something different when the traditional is always the best approach. They also stated thedark blue shirt was a definite no-no. The only thing I think about the customer service issue would be ifthey judged me on the conversation that I had with them. Not a bigdeal, but I would have preferred that being the reason. Like you said,as long as you're nice to the other person and you help them out, there's not much more to it. I even gave them an example that I hadwith one of the vice presidents that I had to deal with, which I guessthat wasn't good enough. Even so, I was happy that they felt I was a good fit on the technicalside of the job. Expescially since I wasn't confident going into itafter hearing the full description of the job. | |
