Should I follow up
I applied for a job a couple of weeks ago. I even recieved an email a couple of Mondays back saying they recieved my resume and would be reviewing it soon. Since then I haven't heard anything. It's for a job in a facility that's just opening up and they're actually looking at a projected hire date sometime last in June. That's the reason I gave some time and didn't already get back in contact with them. Should I just give them a call in the next few days? Also, I emailed my resume since there was no phone number listed in the job listing, but in the email a phone number is listed in her signature line. Should I e-mail again or just go ahead and call? It sounds like the e-mail reply you received was an automated response that was set up for the sole purpose of letting applicants know that the company at least has your resume in their system. I received more than a few of these when I was sending out my resumes, also. The signature on the bottom of the e-mail could just be the signature that is programmed into all outgoing e-mails from the person who set up the response. Most likely that person is the actual person who will be contacting potential candidates for interviews. You really have nothing to lose by giving them a call to verify that the position is still unfilled and that you are still being considered. I am sure with a start date that is a couple of months away that it is still unfilled. At the very least you will get a voice mail and at the very most you will be able to talk to the individual and maybe she will even give you a quick phone interview. The company may also have anticipated that there would be many resumes sent to them and have provided themselves with a timeframe consistent with that probability and their anticipated start date for the position. If they are receiving a boatload of people applying, then your contacting the human resource individual will at last keep your name in his/her mind and when it comes to the culling of candidates and your resume gets looked at, more attention may be paid to you you because you showed that tiny bit of extra interest in the company and position. I am a Recruiter by trade. You did get an automated response. While I make the effort to follow up with candidates interviewed who did not get hired, many companies do not have the time to do so. If you never get a call, you should re-assess the position you applied for and/or re-write a better resume because your resume has probably been screened out. I only spend about 20 seconds looking at each resume, so it had better be eye catching. To give you perspective, in order to get 1 hire, I have to screen at least 90 resumes to call at least 30 qualified candidates. Of the 30, I only seriously interview about 10 to narrow it down to the top 3 or 4 to interview with the department manager. So, this may sound harsh, but plan on competing with 100+ candidates for each job you apply to. And on a positive note, think about the jobs you did get....you beat 100+ applicants for that 1 position. Good luck and happy hunting!! | |
