Hi all question...
Hi Everyone. Quick question----Which is more imperative--making it past HR --OR--scoring big with hiring manager.......who trumps who?? I know it is important to do well with both here but some friends and I were talking today----and I am asking the question here on MONSTER!!
If you don't make it past HR, you won't get a chance to impress the hiring manager. If you make it past HR, but can't impress the hiring manager, you still won't get the job. You have to get them both right. If you have what it takes to impress one, but not the other, you won't get the job. It's not about who trumps whom.
In some companies the HM has more clout, in others it is HR. You won't know which is which so you just have to take each step as it comes.

I would say that unless you have a huge disqualifier (criminal record, job hopper, etc...) the hiring manager would have more say.
Christine is right. Respect all gatekeepers from the receptionist to the entry-level HR person calling you, to the HR Manager or Recruiter interviewing you, to the hiring manager. You don't have a foot in the door until both feet are hired. As a Corporate Recruiter, I am more than happy to reject candidates who are rude to me or to the receptionist. Hope this helps. Moreover, I know there are many qualified, and great workers amongst you, so I want to help all of you streamline your interviewing techniques. If you don't play "the game," you will not be hired. | |
