interview homework assignment

I am really looking for some input. I went to an interview today for a marketing position, and I was asked this week to come up with a short term mock marketing plan based on what I know about the company. I am really looking to come up with a dynamic and innovative presentation of information. Has any one had an experience like this at an interview, and does anyone have any input on what would be a show-stopper. cdo's/don't ...etc.etc

Thanks!

Don't give away anything that will make you crazy if they steal your ideas and hire someone else.

There's always a risk with these types of assignments.  It is probably best not to go into too much detail for that reason.

If you're doing powerpoint, don't put too much text on a slide, don't stand there and read them what's on the slide, describe and explain, they can read.  Don't fuss with animation and busy stuff but don't do boring black text on white either.  Simple, clean, crisp for formating and content.

Good luck!

Tess

I have absolutely no idea what the heck the marketing field entails. What I do know is that when I am subjected to commercials, billboards, radio advertisements, etc that have ridiculous animated geckos and caterpillars, I have to hold back my supper. Their was a campaign for a sandwich restaurant chain several years ago which featured singing, dancing, guitar playing vermin. That one campaign turned me off that chain and I have never eaten there nor will I ever eat there.

The ones I love are the advertisements such as (this may be regional to where I live); it is a communications company and there is a totally geeky looking and acting male who is stating to the repair man that he believes his phone hasn't rung because all the "smokin hot ladies" he has given his number to have been calling at once and jamming his phone lines. He just is so "real". I can actually picture that happening to certain peole I know.

Does this help in any way?

I guess I am concerned about  what they are looking for. The question was phrased as what I would contribute in a 30/60day time period, based on what I know and what we talked about, and to create a budget for these activites.

I just dont know how specific to be. And again, I dont want to go into too much detail. Also- this is something that I am sending, not presenting.

It's not unusual for a marketing or advertising type job to have an applicant do some sort of presentation or "homework assignment."  This is an excellent way to test your ability and see how you think.  Instead of asking for advice on how to proceed, you should be using your own marketing background and skills to come up with something.  After all, you're the one who's the "marketing expert," and are selling yourself to them as this.  Having to consult others to me shows you're either unsure what to do, lacking confidence, or don't know your stuff.

You need to use your own creativeness and background to come up with something you feel is great work.  Think of it as a school project and they're you're teacher.  What would you do?  How much effort will you put into it?  Approaching it this way will help you out.  But it has to be YOU who come up with things not us.  We're not the ones applying for the job and so we shouldn't be the ones doing your work for you.
