Dress for the 2nd interview
I have a 2nd interview coming up and not sure how to dress. When I was at the 1st interview I was told the office was office casual but I noticed that people were more casual than office casual. There were people wearing shorts and flip-flops!! (I won't be that casual) I read an article that said that you should not dress up more than the interviewer. So can I just wear slacks and nice shirt or should I dress in a traditional interview suit. Any input would be great.
I would dress similar to how you dressed the first time. Generally in the second interview you will meet with a director or someone you haven't met before. So this really would be their first impression of you. When I interview or my boss interview, sometimes we are very casual but expect the candidate to be business professional. Everyone is different but I would go with the suit.
My opinion, dress professionally. I had an interview yesterday and felt very weid in a suit, which I usually do since these are NOT the type of clothes I normally wear. The first and second interviewer were dressed extremely casually. Today, I have yet another interview with that company, this time with a VP. Even though I feel silly in business clothes, I don't think it would be appropriate to dress down for a meeting with an executive. It would be another story if the interviewer specifically told you to dress more casually for the 2nd interview, but since they haven't remarked on your choice of attire, I would play it safe and dress up. Btw, I've never heard of this rule not to dress better than the interviewer. It doesn't make sense. How are you supposed to know in advance what the interviewer is going to wear? And what if the interviewer wears ripped jeans and a T-shirt? It would still be a sign of disrespect for an applicant to show up dressed in a similar fashion. It's better to be overdressed than underdressed. Just my 2¢. You should dress in the way you would for any intrview. Worry about what type of "casual" clothes you get to wear after you have started working there. Just a thought, when you interviewed for the first time, was it on a Friday? I ask this because many, many, many companies have "casual Friday" where anything except pajamas and bum-bearing shorts are fair game.
