Postpone starting date on new job

I' m working for +5 years for my current company but decided some months ago to change career and started looking for a new job. I' ve 1 positive answer for really challenging job and one that is getting close.

Now I got at my current company a new project till end of September that I don' t want to miss... It' s a kind of project I' ve been working for for 5 years to get it and possible after this it will be business as usual again. This new project just came up by accident (coming from one of our customers). So I' m definite in my plan to change career after this.

Should I explain some way to my future employer and try to negotiate a starting date after September or is this ' not done' and go for the new job, despite this fantastic opportunity (which will not be lasting for sure, it' s only for a couple of months).

While the new project may be nice, if you are changing careers it probably won' t do anything for your resume.

If you have been looking for a job for a while and have one within your grasp, take it and don' t put in jeopardy by trying to delay it. If you just got into the job market and can play around for a while, you can certainly ask for the delay (I doubt they will wait that long) and then decide what to do.
