Getting past the cover letter and resume

How long after you send a cover letter and resume should you follow up, if at all?

There are a few postings I am interested in; some have been 7 days andlonger. I want the employer to keep me in their mind and at the top oftheir list but at the same time, I don't want to be a pest.

I've read about sending emails with a suble reminder of the interest you still have in the job.

I'm confused! I guess the way I'm starting to look at it, WHAT DO I HAVE TO LOOSE?!!

Any suggestions?
If the ad doesn't say "do not call", you should call a week after mailing or a couple of days after emailing. Don't ask whether they received the resume, give them a five-second explanation as to why you are perfect for the job and ask for an interview.

I would suggest waiting about a week to a week and a half before contacting them.
