How do you explain why you left so quick

Ok, here is the dilema. I took a new job out of state and come to find out, I hated it after a few months. I was frustrated and very unhappy because it wasn't what was promised. I left after a few months because my wife saw how frustrated I was at the politics and BS going on, I tried to stay longer but it was making my wife and I miserable. I have phone interviews I thought went very well, but alas they keep asking why I left the last place.
I tell them it wasn't the right fit and that it wasn't what was promised; I include some detail but I don't bad mouth the company in anyway. They  seem to be ok with that, but then I find out later they went with other candidates.

I know the reason is because i left the last place after only a few months, but if I had stayed I would gotten sick from all the stress and politics.

How can you get past this with the interviewer?

I wouldn't use the phrase "it wasn't what was promised" it sounds as if the job changed and you didn't adapt or maybe you didn't hear them right. I'd just explain that you took the job and realized it wasn't a great fit and didn't want to waste anyone's time remaining there unhappy and stressed.

Just a thought, although you feel the reason you aren't getting offers is because of your employment this may not be the reason, but you are hung up on it and may be overlooking other issues.

Valid point, I guess I'm just mad that I moved across the country for a job that didn't work out.
