why do you want to work for us
I just applied for a job and I'm expecting that I'll at the very least recieve a phone interview, and thats a question that I'm having trouble properly phrasing the answer if they ask. The job is a better all around fit, it's in a different state(one I actually want to live in) but only an hour away from where I am now, salary starts at 30% more than what I'm making now(which is very important to me), the position is maybe a half step above the type of position I have right now but I match all of the preferred qualifications perfectly. The main reason I want the job is because of the money increase. It also helps that I've been wanting to relocate, and this company also runs similarly to the place I work at now. I'm just not sure how to phrase all this if I'm asked why I want to work for them. Try something like this: I think this job would be a great opportunity for me. It perfectly matches all my skills and abilities ( you can give some examples of how that is so), AND I've been looking to relocate to (name of state here). From what I know about (name of company here), the company's vision (or goals or whatever) perfectly line up with mine (again can give some examples). I think this will absolutely further my career in (whatever field or industry) and look forward to a long tenure at (name of company here). You don't have to spill your guts and tell them EVERY reason why you want it. Just focus on a few of them.
Tess Use what the interviewer tells you about the position and focus on their needs. Try to reiterate some of the qualities that the interviewer(s) are looking for and elaborate on them to your experience and their needs. If they need someone with certain software experience, give them a rundown of your experience and how it relates to the job they want performed. Something to the effect...I know you're looking someone with experience using Microsoft Excel...I can bring ___ years using Excel and something that you have done in Excel. On a personal not, I just interviewed with a company that was looking for experience in Excel and that's what I did. I also showed them a little chart that I created and they were impressed and I stayed focused on what the needs of the company not my own. I got the job. Good Luck...Keep us posted
I cover this exact question in my interviewing book. They want to know how much you know about them, and how much thought you've put into your career plans. In other words, what is it about that particular place that makes you want to work for them? You could work wherever you want doing the exact same job so why that place? Do they offer more opportunity? Are they bigger or an industry leader? Are they more respected? You need to do some research into what that company offers that makes you truly want to work for them. But don't say it's the money! That'll kill your chances right then and there. They want to know that you're not just looking for a job "wherever," but have thought about why that place is the right one for you. So think about how you're a good fit for them and vice-verse. | |
