help with last minute interview TOMORROW

i was fired from my last job for doing something i had no clue i could get fired for and actually found out is illegal! they fired about 12 people. if my interviewer asks why i left my last job what do i say? do i just tell them the whole truth and hope they believe me or "edit" a little bit or completely make something up because my last employer can only give out the dates that i started and finished. PLEASE HELP!

It might be helpful to know what it was you did--was it work related, or something personal on the job? In any event, tell the truth, but keep it as short & simple as possible. I myself would certainly not say that what you did was illegal! I would say something to the effect that you and a number of other employees were let go because you were not following a company policy that none of you knew existed. Or were doing something against procedure, but had never been told it wasn't proper procedure. Something to that effect: you did something improperly, along with several others; you were let go because of it; and you have learned you need to clearly understand company policies and procedures, and that you now know enough to ask for clarification if & when you need it. Be sure you accept blame; don't put the burden on your employer.

I don't think you need to give details, as long as you are 100% positive your former employer will not do so.

"you and a number of other employees were let go because you were not following a company policy that none of you knew existed. Or were doing something against procedure, but had never been told it wasn't proper procedure. "

I think this is an excellent policy, from Ann_Marie, because it's the truth! You can't be held responsible for the rest of your life for doing something no-one told you was not permitted.

One other thing here. If they have anything about them they will want to know what you will bring to their party, so make sure you spend more of your time considering the positives you are going to tell them about, than how on earth you can defend yourself.

It's a waste of valuable energy and activity.

And another thing - give us a bit more time to come up with plausible work-arounds next time wink!!
